The recording kept playing.

Another voice.

Rebecca.

“Mom said she needs to be punished.”

A third sound followed.

A man’s voice from months earlier.

A doctor.

“…the procedure is possible if the family requests—”

The narrator’s breath stopped.

The world tilted.

Helen stepped forward violently.

“You recorded us?”

James finally looked at her.

“Yes.”

His voice was calm.

But underneath it—steel.

“I’ve been silent for thirty years. Not blind.”

Rebecca’s hands trembled.

“This is insane…”

But no one answered her.
