CHAPTER 4 — Firelight Confession

Police lights washed over the backyard.
Red and blue moved through pink decorations like violence correcting innocence.
Helen was escorted to the porch.
Rebecca followed, still insisting, still unraveling.
But James stayed inside.
With his daughter.
And his granddaughter.
The narrator held Lily close, rocking slowly, whispering into her hair without realizing she was crying.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t see it…”
James stood beside her.
Quiet again.
But no longer passive.
“I did,” he said.
A long pause.
Then—
“I just didn’t act soon enough.”
The narrator looked up at him.
“You saved her.”
James shook his head.
“No.”
May you like
He glanced at Lily.
“She saved me.”
