Chapter 2 - The Signature

Sarah stared at the man her daughter had married fourteen years earlier.

Julian didn’t apologize.

He didn’t even look embarrassed.

Instead, he loosened his expensive tie and stepped around the hair scattered across his office floor.

“Claire doesn’t need to know about this.”

Sarah almost smiled.

Claire was Sarah’s only daughter.

She had defended Julian for years.

Every missed anniversary.

Every questionable investment.

Every unexplained overnight business trip.

Sarah had kept her suspicions to herself because Claire loved him.

That silence suddenly felt like complicity.

“You locked your mother-in-law in an office while your assistant shaved my hair.”

Julian sighed.

“Victoria got carried away.”

Victoria folded her arms.

“I did exactly what was necessary.”

Julian shot her an irritated look.

Sarah noticed it.

Not anger.

Fear.

Victoria knew something Julian didn’t want exposed.

Sarah looked at the documents again.

“What happens if I refuse?”

Julian’s expression hardened.

“You shouldn’t.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He stepped closer.

“The company has cash-flow problems.”

Sarah said nothing.

“We need collateral.”

“My house isn’t collateral.”

“It can be.”

“No.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“Sarah, that property is worth nearly twelve million dollars.”

“And?”

“And you live there alone.”

That sentence struck harder than Sarah expected.

Her husband, Thomas, had died three years earlier.

Since then, Julian had repeatedly suggested she move into something smaller.

Sarah had assumed he was being practical.

Now she understood.

He had been measuring the house.

Calculating its value.

Waiting.

“You think because I’m sixty-three and widowed, I’m disposable?”

Julian rubbed his forehead.

“Don’t dramatize this.”

Sarah picked up the pen.

Victoria smiled.

Julian relaxed.

Sarah lowered the pen toward the signature line.

Then she stopped.

“What percentage of Mercer Development do you think you own, Julian?”

He blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“Fifty-one percent.”

Sarah nodded.

“That’s what Thomas told you.”

“It’s what the corporate records say.”

“Which records?”

Julian frowned.

Sarah placed the pen down.

“My husband believed people revealed themselves faster when they thought they were powerful.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Thomas never gave you control.”

Silence filled the office.

Victoria looked at Julian.

Julian laughed nervously.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Sarah reached for her purse.

Julian blocked the door.

Sarah met his eyes.

“Move.”

“You’re not leaving until we settle this.”

Sarah reached inside her purse.

Julian’s gaze dropped.

She removed her phone.

On the screen was a running audio recorder.

Victoria went pale.

Sarah held it up.

“Everything from the moment those clippers touched my head.”

Julian lunged.

Sarah stepped backward.

He stopped when someone knocked loudly on the office door.

“Mr. Mercer?”

It was the building security director.

Sarah smiled.

“I texted him while Victoria was busy fixing my attitude.”

Julian stared at her.

Sarah walked past him.

At the doorway, she stopped.

“I’ll still host Christmas dinner.”

Victoria scoffed.

“You’re inviting us after this?”

Sarah looked back at them.

“Oh, absolutely.”

May you like

Then she smiled.

“I want the whole family there when you find out exactly whose house you’ve been trying to steal.”
