“The person who gave Julian access was my brother, David.”
Sarah stopped the video.
Claire stared at her.
“No.”
David.
Sarah’s younger brother.
The man who had stood between Julian and Sarah at Christmas dinner.
The man who had defended her.
The man who had eaten at her table for thirty years.
Sarah pressed play again.
Thomas continued.
“David believed the company should have belonged equally to Sarah’s family after our marriage.”
“He resented that I retained voting control.”
“He began sharing trust information with Raymond Ellis.”
Sarah felt physically ill.
Claire whispered.
“Uncle David?”
Thomas continued.
“I confronted him once.”
“He promised to stop.”
“I wanted to believe him.”
“I was wrong.”
The final recording contained scanned emails.
David and Raymond.
Years of messages.
Trust structures.
Passwords.
Schedules.
Even information about Sarah’s house.
Sarah remembered Christmas night.
David had looked confused when Julian took her chair.
Had that been acting?
She called him.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Noah checked the driveway camera archive.
David had visited the property three times in the month before Christmas.
All three times, Sarah had been away.
Claire whispered.
“He knew where the safe was.”
Sarah suddenly remembered the broken kitchen window.
LET THE DEAD STAY BURIED.
David had known the house.
Known the alarm.
Known Thomas’s photograph.
Detective Brooks arrived forty minutes later.
By dawn, police entered David’s home.
He was gone.
His wife Ellen sat crying in the kitchen.
She claimed she knew nothing.
Then Brooks found a packed suitcase beneath the bed.
Inside were two passports.
One for David.
One for Ellen.
And eighty thousand dollars in cash.
Ellen broke.
“David said we were leaving after Christmas.”
“Why?”
“He said Sarah was going to destroy everything.”
Sarah stood in the doorway.
Ellen looked at her and cried harder.
“I swear I didn’t know.”
Sarah believed her.
Brooks found David’s phone abandoned near the airport.
But David never boarded a plane.
By noon, federal agents issued a warrant.
Julian faced fraud and conspiracy charges.
Raymond faced kidnapping, fraud, extortion, and investigation into Nathan’s death.
Victoria agreed to cooperate.
And David Mercer disappeared.
For the first time, Sarah realized the threat had not ended.
It had moved closer.
