Chapter 11 - Claire’s Name

Sarah read the authorization line six times.

Claire Mercer.

Her daughter.

Rebecca touched her arm.

“Sarah.”

“No.”

Sarah stepped backward.

“No.”

Noah entered the unit.

“What happened?”

Sarah turned the laptop away.

Too late.

He had seen his mother’s name.

His face went white.

“That’s impossible.”

Sarah wanted to agree.

But Thomas’s warning returned.

Trust records.

Not people.

They drove home in silence.

Claire was waiting in the study.

When Sarah entered, she closed the door.

“Mom, where were you?”

Sarah placed the printed spreadsheet on the desk.

Claire looked down.

Then she stopped breathing.

“What is this?”

“You tell me.”

Claire shook her head.

“I’ve never seen these.”

“Those are your authorization credentials.”

“I didn’t approve anything.”

Noah watched from the doorway.

Claire looked at him.

“You believe me, right?”

Noah didn’t answer.

That silence broke something in her.

Claire started crying.

Sarah hated every second of it.

But she kept her voice firm.

“Did Julian ever ask you to sign corporate documents?”

“All the time.”

“What kind?”

“I don’t know.”

Sarah stared.

Claire covered her face.

“Mom, I trusted my husband.”

“Did you give him your passwords?”

Claire looked up.

Sarah already knew.

“Yes.”

Noah cursed under his breath.

Claire snapped.

“I didn’t know.”

Sarah suddenly understood.

Julian had used Claire’s trustee credentials.

But one question remained.

“Why did you have trustee credentials at all?”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“Dad gave them to me.”

Sarah frowned.

“When?”

“Six months before he died.”

Sarah sat down.

Thomas had never told her.

Claire continued.

“He said if something happened to you, I needed to understand the trust.”

“Did he mention Julian?”

“No.”

“Did he tell you not to share the login?”

Claire’s silence answered.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Then Claire whispered.

“There’s something else.”

Sarah looked at her.

“Julian knew Dad had given me access before I told him.”

“How?”

“I never figured it out.”

Sarah felt another piece click into place.

Someone had been watching Thomas’s estate planning in real time.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

SARAH, YOUR DAUGHTER ISN’T THE TRAITOR.

Sarah stood.

Another message arrived.

BUT I KNOW WHO IS.

Then a photograph appeared.

It showed Martin Hale entering a hotel four years earlier.

Beside him was Victoria Blake.
