Chapter 18 - The Woman at the Fence
Harrison returned to Hartland before sunrise.
He rode alone toward the northern boundary.
Fresh footprints crossed the wet grass.
They led to a small camp hidden among cedar trees.
An empty food tin rested beside a cold fire.
A woman’s coat hung from a branch.
Harrison recognized the stitching.
He had given Anna that coat on their twentieth anniversary.
“Anna?”
No one answered.
He followed the tracks toward the fence.
A woman stood on the opposite side.
Her hair was white.
Her body was thin.
But Harrison knew the way she held her shoulders.
“Anna.”
She turned.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Harrison crossed the fence.
Anna touched his face as if confirming he was real.
“You got old.”
“So did you.”
She smiled through tears.
“I tried to reach the ranch.”
“I saw Evelyn’s men.”
“I thought Silver Crown still controlled everything.”
“Evelyn is dead.”
Anna closed her eyes.
“Mara?”
“Alive.”
“The children?”
“Safe.”
“Daniel?”
“Waiting for you.”
Anna collapsed against him.
Back at the ranch house, Mara stood on the porch.
She did not run.
Her body was still healing.
But the sound she made when she saw her mother brought every ranch worker to silence.
Anna crossed the yard.
Mother and daughter held each other for a long time.
Lucy and Tommy watched from the doorway.
Then Lucy approached carefully.
“You are the lady from the dark room.”
Anna knelt.
“I am sorry I could not take you with me.”
“You left medicine.”
“I tried to help.”
Lucy touched her grandmother’s face.
“Mom said dead people do not get old.”
Anna laughed and cried at the same time.
The family gathered in the kitchen that evening.
For the first time, every chair was occupied.
Daniel examined Anna’s memories of the mountain facility.
She described a Silver Crown leader no one had identified.
Evelyn reported to him.
Silas feared him.
Gordon Price called him the Chairman.
Anna had seen his face only once.
She drew it from memory.
Harrison stared at the picture.
The man was Walter Hart.
