Chapter 17 - The Empty Grave

Harrison obtained a court order to open Anna’s grave.
The coffin contained bags of sand and several pieces of medical equipment.
There was no body.
The doctor who signed her death certificate had disappeared years earlier.
His name appeared in Silver Crown’s payment ledger.
Harrison remembered Anna’s final months.
She became weak quickly.
Evelyn arranged private medical care.
Visitors were restricted.
Harrison spent most days negotiating ranch contracts because Evelyn assured him Anna was comfortable.
He had trusted his sister again.
Mara found a photograph inside the Silver Crown files.
It showed Anna sitting in a wheelchair at a mountain facility.
The timestamp was dated five years after her supposed death.
Lucy looked at the image.
“That is the woman from the white house.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“What woman?” Harrison asked.
“She came at night.”
“She gave Mom medicine when Evelyn wanted her awake.”
Mara stared at the photograph.
“I never saw her face.”
“They kept the room dark.”
Lucy nodded.
“She told me not to call her Grandma.”
“She said Evelyn would hurt us if she knew.”
Anna had been inside the same prison as Mara and the children.
She had secretly protected them.
The mountain facility had been closed two years earlier.
Federal records showed all patients transferred to private care centers.
One transport list contained Anna’s initials.
The destination was a monastery clinic in New Mexico.
Harrison, Mara, and two federal agents flew there.
The clinic director denied knowing Anna.
Then Mara noticed a silver horse pin inside his desk drawer.
Agents searched the building.
They found an underground ward.
Most rooms were empty.
One contained a neatly folded Hartland blanket.
Beside it was a recent drawing made by Lucy.
The drawing had disappeared from the white house months earlier.
Written beneath it were the words:
My granddaughter found Harrison.
He will come.
A nurse finally confessed.
Anna had escaped three weeks earlier.
She left after hearing that Mara reached the ranch.
“Where did she go?” Harrison asked.
The nurse handed him a bus ticket.
Anna had traveled to Hartland County.

She had been near the ranch since the night of the celebration.
Someone had been watching the family from the hills.
