Chapter 16 - The Ranch Without Evelyn
Hartland Ranch changed slowly.
Harrison removed every Silver Crown employee.
He opened the financial records to investigators.
He sold his private aircraft and several luxury properties to repay the employee pension fund Daniel had tried to protect.
Some board members called him reckless.
Others accused Mara of manipulating him.
Harrison stopped caring what powerful people whispered.
Daniel became the ranch’s independent financial director.
He refused to work from Harrison’s office.
“I spent eight years locked underground because of secret rooms and closed doors.”
“My office will have windows.”
Mara smiled when he said it.
Lucy began attending the small school near the ranch.
On her first day, she filled her backpack with bread.
Harrison found it before she left.
“You will have lunch at school.”
“What if Tommy gets hungry?”
“He will eat at home.”
“What if the food disappears?”
Harrison understood.
Hunger did not leave a child simply because a pantry became full.
He placed an emergency snack box inside both children’s rooms.
Then he showed Lucy the account created in her name.
“You will never have to ask a stranger for leftovers again.”
She looked at him seriously.
“You were not a stranger after you followed me.”
“What was I?”
“A grandpa who did not know yet.”
Mara remained weak for months.
Some days, she could ride a horse for ten minutes.
Other days, walking to the porch exhausted her.
She refused to hide the scars on her wrists.
When visitors stared, she stared back.
Silas’s testimony revealed dozens of Silver Crown properties.
Federal teams searched each one.
They found stolen records, hidden accounts, and graves belonging to workers who had resisted illegal operations.
But they did not find every missing person.
One file contained a list of Silver Crown prisoners.
Daniel’s name appeared beside the word RECOVERED.
Mara’s name appeared beside ESCAPED.
Another name appeared beneath theirs.
Anna Hart.
Harrison’s wife had supposedly died from cancer twelve years earlier.
According to the file, she had been transferred to a Silver Crown medical site three days before her funeral.
