Chapter 4: Justice on the Same Steps

Three months later...

The same courthouse steps stood beneath bright autumn sunlight.

The marble had been cleaned.

The broken handrails repaired.

Only those who had witnessed that terrible day remembered the blood.

Television cameras lined both sides of the entrance.

Victoria Langford emerged wearing handcuffs instead of campaign ribbons.

Reporters shouted questions.

She answered none.

Federal agents escorted her past the exact step where Evelyn had fallen.

She finally looked up.

Across the plaza stood Daniel.

Beside him was Evelyn.

Alive.

Healthy.

Holding her newborn daughter safely against her chest.

Victoria stopped walking.

For the first time since her arrest, genuine fear appeared in her eyes.

The judge's ruling echoed through every national news broadcast that evening.

Attempted murder.

Public corruption.

Wire fraud.

Conspiracy.

Twenty-eight years in federal prison.

No parole.

No immunity.

No political protection.

After the sentencing, Daniel walked quietly beside his sister toward the courthouse exit.

Little Emma slept peacefully in Evelyn's arms, unaware of the battle fought before she was born.

"You know," Daniel said softly, smiling at his niece, "she'll never remember any of this."

Evelyn looked down at her daughter.

"No."

She kissed the baby's forehead.

"But she'll grow up knowing one thing."

Daniel smiled.

"What's that?"

Evelyn looked back once at the courthouse steps where her life had almost ended.

"The truth may fall..."

She adjusted the blanket around Emma.

"...but it always finds a way to stand back up."

Together, they walked away beneath the afternoon sun, leaving behind the marble staircase that had nearly taken everything—but had ultimately become the place where justice began.

The End.
