Evelyn remained weak, but her memory was frighteningly clear.
Daniel sat beside her hospital bed while detectives quietly recorded every word.
"It happened before I reached the stairs."
She spoke slowly.
"Victoria stopped me."
"What did she say?"
Evelyn looked toward the window.
"She asked whether I had told anyone."
"Told anyone what?"
A tear slid silently down her cheek.
"I discovered evidence against her."
Daniel frowned.
"What evidence?"
Evelyn reached toward her handbag resting on the chair.
"My tablet."
Daniel opened it.
A folder appeared.
Government Contracts.
Inside were hundreds of financial records.
Wire transfers.
Fake consulting invoices.
Construction bids awarded through shell companies.
Millions of dollars redirected into private accounts.
Victoria hadn't pushed Evelyn because of family.
She had pushed her because Evelyn was the forensic accountant assigned to audit the state's largest infrastructure project.
And she had found everything.
The detective quietly whispered,
"This isn't attempted murder anymore."
Daniel looked at the files.
"This is corruption."
The detective nodded.
"Federal corruption."
Before anyone spoke again, hospital security burst through the doorway.
"Mr. Hayes..."
"What?"
"Federal agents are downstairs."
"They're here already?"
The guard nodded.
"They're not looking for your sister."
