Chapter 1: The Name That Echoed Across the Marble

The scream echoed against the white marble columns long after Evelyn collapsed.
For one impossible second, no one moved.
Then chaos erupted.
Law clerks abandoned their briefcases. Reporters rushed forward before security shoved them back. Someone shouted for an ambulance while dozens of phones rose into the air, recording every horrifying second.
Evelyn lay curled at the bottom of the staircase, both trembling hands wrapped protectively around her swollen stomach.
"My baby..."
Her voice barely existed.
Blood slowly spread beneath the sleeve of her navy maternity dress where her elbow had struck the stone.
Daniel Hayes reached her first.
His polished shoes skidded across the marble as he dropped to his knees beside his younger sister.
"Evelyn."
His voice cracked.
She looked at him through unfocused eyes.
"I... I didn't fall..."
Daniel carefully supported her head, terrified that even touching her might hurt the child she carried.
"Don't talk."
"I didn't..."
She swallowed painfully.
"Someone..."
Another breath.
"...pushed me."
Silence swallowed the entire staircase.
Daniel slowly lifted his head.
His eyes traveled across every face watching from above.
Judges.
Politicians.
Corporate attorneys.
Private security.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
Someone in this crowd had just tried to kill his pregnant sister.
And everyone suddenly looked guilty.
A security officer hurried toward him.
"Sir, EMS is four minutes away."
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he noticed something resting on the fifth marble step.
A single pearl button.
Small.
Expensive.
Freshly torn.
He reached down and picked it up between two fingers.
His expression changed.
"This wasn't an accident," he whispered.
Across the staircase, one elegant woman instinctively touched the sleeve of her cream-colored designer blazer.

One button was missing.
Her face lost all color.
