Chapter 4: The Last Pierce Secret

Three weeks later, the courtroom was so crowded that people stood along the walls.

Reporters filled the back rows.

Pierce executives sat pale and silent.

Estelle Pierce entered wearing black, as if she were attending a funeral instead of her own trial.

Christopher sat at the front with Emma beside him.

This time, she was not hidden.

She wore a simple white dress, her hair clipped neatly back, one hand locked in her father’s.

Yvette sat behind them.

Nora sat beside the prosecutor.

Juliette sat under guard, waiting to testify.

The trial should have ended quickly.

The recording exposed the conspiracy.

The will exposed the motive.

Juliette exposed the attempted murder.

The phone exposed Rachel’s crash.

But Estelle had one final weapon.

She stood and addressed the court herself.

“My son is emotional,” she said. “He has been manipulated by a child who may not even be his.”

A murmur swept through the room.

Christopher felt Emma’s hand tighten.

Estelle turned toward the judge.

“I request a DNA test before any inheritance claim continues.”

For the first time that morning, Emma looked terrified.

Not because of money.

Because she thought blood was the only thing that made her loved.

Christopher stood.

“No.”

His attorney whispered urgently, but Christopher ignored him.

He looked at Emma.

Then at the court.

“I don’t need a test to know who my daughter is.”

Estelle smiled.

A small victorious smile.

Then the judge spoke.

“The court already has the sealed DNA records submitted by David Kessler before his death.”

Estelle’s smile vanished.

The judge continued.

“Emma Monroe Pierce is legally and biologically Christopher Pierce’s daughter.”

The courtroom exploded in whispers.

Emma stared up at Christopher.

“You knew?”

Christopher knelt in front of her.

“I knew enough. But I should have protected you sooner.”

Emma’s lips trembled.

“You came.”

Christopher cupped her small face.

“I will always come.”

Estelle was convicted of conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, and ordering Rachel Monroe’s death.

Juliette testified and received a reduced sentence, but not forgiveness.

Yvette became Emma’s legal guardian backup by Christopher’s request.

Nora became head counsel of Pierce Holdings.

And Emma?

She became the little girl no one in that family could erase again.

Months later, Christopher sold the mansion.

Not because he had lost it.

Because Emma deserved a home without ghosts.

They moved to a smaller house by the lake, with yellow curtains, a garden, and a pool that Emma only approached when she was ready.

One summer evening, she stood at the edge of the water holding Christopher’s hand.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Can people be born into bad families…”

She looked up at him.

“…and still make a good one?”

Christopher smiled gently.

Then he picked her up, held her close, and looked toward the sunset.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

He kissed her forehead.

“That’s exactly what we’re doing.”

And for the first time in her life, Emma believed him.

The End.
