Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Curtain

Christopher Pierce carried Emma through the mansion like the entire world had narrowed down to one trembling child in his arms.

Her wet cheek rested against his shoulder. Her tiny fingers clutched the collar of his soaked white shirt as if letting go would drop her back into the nightmare.

Behind him, Juliette’s screams faded down the marble hallway.

“Chris! Please! You don’t understand!”

But Christopher did understand now.

That was the problem.

For months, he had mistaken cruelty for discipline. Lies for concern. Silence for safety.

He had let adults explain away a child’s fear.

Never again.

“Call Dr. Lawson,” he said to Yvette. “And my attorney.”

Yvette nodded, still holding the recorder like it was made of fire.

Then Christopher looked toward the grand staircase.

At the top landing, Estelle Pierce stood perfectly still.

His mother.

Elegant. Silver-haired. Untouchable.

She looked down at Emma, then at Christopher.

Not with fear.

With irritation.

“You are making a spectacle,” Estelle said.

Christopher’s jaw tightened.

“My daughter almost died.”

Estelle’s eyes flickered.

Only once.

“Your ward had an accident.”

Christopher stepped closer, still holding Emma.

“She is not my ward.”

The staff froze.

Yvette lowered her gaze.

Christopher’s voice did not rise, but it cut through the mansion like broken glass.

“She is my daughter.”

For the first time in Christopher’s life, Estelle Pierce looked truly angry.

Not shocked.

Angry.

Because the secret had finally been spoken inside her own house.

Emma lifted her head weakly.

“Daddy?”

Christopher looked down at her.

The word hit him harder than the water ever could.

“Yes,” he whispered. “I’m here.”

Estelle descended one step.

“You have no idea what that admission will cost this family.”

Christopher turned slowly.

“No, Mother. I know exactly what hiding it already cost.”

Then Yvette’s phone rang.

She answered, listened, and went pale.

“Sir…”

Christopher looked at her.

Yvette swallowed.

“The family lawyer is dead.”

The mansion fell silent.

And from upstairs, Estelle smiled.
