Chapter 2: The Will That Was Never Meant To Be Found

By midnight, police cars lined the long driveway of the Pierce estate.

Juliette was gone.

The pool courtyard was sealed.

The recorder was evidence.

But Christopher knew the real danger had not left the house.

It was standing upstairs in pearls.

The lawyer’s death had been called a heart attack at first. Convenient. Clean. Unquestioned.

But two hours later, his assistant arrived at the estate shaking so badly she could barely hold her handbag.

Her name was Nora Vale.

She had worked for Pierce family attorney David Kessler for nine years.

And she carried an envelope marked:

FOR CHRISTOPHER ONLY — IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME.

Christopher opened it in his study while Emma slept on the couch beside him, wrapped in a blanket, Yvette sitting near her like a guard dog in sensible shoes.

Inside the envelope was a flash drive, a handwritten note, and a copy of a will Christopher had never seen.

His father’s real will.

Not the one Estelle had used to control the family empire for sixteen years.

The real one.

Christopher read the first page.

Then the second.

By the third, his hands were shaking.

His father had left controlling shares of Pierce Holdings not to Estelle.

Not even to Christopher.

He had left them in trust for Christopher’s firstborn child.

Emma.

Rachel Monroe had not been a scandal.

She had been protected.

Emma had not been hidden because she was shameful.

She had been hidden because she was powerful.

Christopher looked at Nora.

“Who else knew?”

Nora’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother. Juliette. Mr. Kessler.”

“And now Kessler is dead.”

Nora nodded.

“He was going to file the corrected documents tomorrow.”

A soft sound came from the couch.

Emma was awake.

She stared at the papers in Christopher’s hand.

“Is this why Grandma hates me?”

No one answered.

Because the truth was crueler than silence.

Before Christopher could reach her, the study lights went out.

The mansion dropped into darkness.

Then the security system began to scream.

Yvette rushed to the window and pulled back the curtain.

At the edge of the lawn, several black cars rolled through the gates.

Cars that belonged to Estelle’s private security.

Christopher picked up Emma.

Nora whispered, “She’s not trying to win in court.”

Christopher looked toward the dark hallway.

May you like

“No,” he said.

“She’s trying to erase the evidence before sunrise.”
