Two hours later, they sat inside a small roadside diner on the edge of the city.
The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead, replacing the warm luxury of crystal chandeliers and marble floors.
Outside, rain streamed down the windows, slowly washing the city's skyline into blurred streaks of gray.
Clara shifted carefully inside the worn vinyl booth.
A slight wince crossed her face before she wrapped both hands around a steaming cup of tea.
"You gave up everything," she whispered.
Emotion tightened her voice.

Julian reached across the table and gently covered her hands with his.
For the first time since leaving the penthouse, the tension in his shoulders eased.

His eyes drifted toward her bruised hands before settling on the gentle curve of her pregnant belly.
"They didn't just hurt you."

The fear that had consumed him earlier was gone.
