Chapter 1: The Weight of Gold

The penthouse was heavy with the scent of designer perfume and the kind of silence that only existed after something unforgivable had happened.

Julian remained on his knees beside the bed, his hands hovering inches above Clara's bruised skin, afraid that even the slightest touch might cause her more pain. He didn't yell. He didn't lose control.

His anger had moved beyond rage.

It had become something colder.

Something far more dangerous.

Slowly, he lifted his head.

His eyes settled on his mother, Eleanor, who stood perfectly still near the bedroom doorway. Her navy silk dress looked immaculate, not a single wrinkle disturbing her polished appearance. Beside her, his father, Arthur, calmly adjusted the cuff of his tailored suit as though he had simply interrupted an ordinary family discussion.

Julian's voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Is this what family means to you?"

The quiet words carried across the room, bouncing off the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the glittering skyline.

Eleanor didn't blink.

She simply folded her hands together.

"She doesn't belong here, Julian," she replied evenly. "We warned you what would happen if you insisted on bringing someone from her world into ours. What you're looking at is merely the cost of ambition."

Clara drew a shaky breath.

One hand instinctively covered her pregnant stomach while the other clutched the silk robe wrapped around her bruised body.

She kept her eyes fixed on the hardwood floor.

In this family, tears weren't seen as pain.

They were seen as weakness.
