Chapter 2: The Severed Thread

The silence that followed was heavier than any shouting match.

Julian slowly rose to his feet.

For a long moment, he simply stared at his father, searching for even the smallest trace of remorse.

There was none.

Arthur glanced at his watch.

Nothing more.

To them, Clara wasn't a person.

She was a problem.

An inconvenient variable threatening an upcoming corporate merger and decades of carefully protected family prestige.

Julian finally spoke.

"You really believe money can erase everything."

His voice remained calm.

That frightened them far more than anger ever could.

He bent down, gently taking Clara's trembling hand into his own.

Carefully, he helped her stand.

She winced as she found her balance.

Without a word, Julian picked up her coat from the nearby armchair and carefully draped it over her shoulders.

"If you walk out that door with her," Eleanor warned, her polished tone finally cracking beneath a layer of ice, "you leave with nothing."

She took one deliberate step forward.

"No company."

"No inheritance."

"No family name."

"You'll become a ghost to us."

Julian didn't even turn around.

Instead, he looked at Clara.

For the first time that night, her pale blue eyes met his.

Behind the exhaustion and fear, he saw something still alive.

Strength.

Hope.

He gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

"Let's go."

Together, they walked toward the door.

Neither of them looked back.
