Chapter 7 - THE VOICE THAT WASN’T HIS
Audio specialists examined Marissa’s recording.
The voice sounded like Alejandro, but small inconsistencies appeared between words.
It had been created from old voicemail messages.
Someone had edited his speech into a new instruction.
Martin possessed years of recorded business calls.
He could have created the fake message.
Marissa believed her brother had asked her to meet near Austin.
She changed her route.
She entered the exact section of highway where her brakes failed.
Alejandro watched the recording repeatedly.
He heard Marissa answer the false voice.
“All right.”
“I’ll see you there.”
Those were the final calm words she recorded.
The knowledge nearly destroyed him.
His voice had been used to lead his sister toward death.
Detective Brooks received a call from Austin police.
Martin Wells had been found alive.
He was hiding inside an abandoned mechanic’s garage owned by Raymond Lane.
The blood in the truck belonged to Raymond.
Raymond had attacked Martin during an argument.
Martin escaped with a cut on his arm.
Raymond was missing.
Police transported Martin to Dallas.
He immediately requested immunity.
He claimed Valerie had ordered Marissa’s death.
Valerie claimed Martin had ordered it.
Both blamed Raymond for damaging the brakes.
Martin admitted redirecting Sophie’s trust.
He said Valerie forged the beneficiary records.
He claimed they planned to return the money before Marissa discovered it.
Instead, they invested it through Alejandro’s trucking company.
Alejandro looked at the financial records.
Several early investments that saved his struggling company came from anonymous lenders.
Martin had arranged them.
Sophie’s stolen money had helped build Alejandro’s fortune.
He felt physically sick.
Everything he believed he had built alone rested partly on money stolen from his daughter.
Rosa read the documents.
“Marissa knew?”
“She discovered it before she died.”
“That is why she did not go to the police immediately.”
Alejandro understood.
Reporting Martin could have destroyed Alejandro’s company and sent drivers into unemployment.
Marissa had tried to recover Sophie’s money quietly.
Her compassion gave the conspirators time to stop her.
Martin continued talking.
After the accident, he believed the danger had ended.
Then Alejandro adopted Sophie.
The trust documents contained a recovery clause.
If Sophie remained alive and a guardian filed the original paperwork before her ninth birthday, the missing money and its investment growth could be reclaimed.
Sophie would turn nine in two months.
Valerie married Alejandro to control the filing process.
Making Sophie appear chronically ill would allow Valerie to become medical guardian.
Sending her away would prevent anyone from hearing the child’s accusations.
“What happens after Sophie turns nine?” Brooks asked.
Martin looked toward the floor.
“The trust becomes permanently transferable.”
