Chapter 19 - THE HOUSE WITHOUT VALERIE
Alejandro sold the Dallas house.
Sophie did not want to sleep in the room where Valerie had entered at night.
Rosa agreed.
They moved into a smaller home near Sophie’s school.
The new house had no hidden medicine compartments.
The bedroom door opened without making a sound.
Sophie chose yellow walls.
She placed the pink blanket at the end of the bed.
The tablet remained inside a drawer.
She used it for games and schoolwork.
The recording feature stayed disabled.
Alejandro no longer traveled overnight without telling Sophie exactly where he would be.
When business required him to leave Dallas, Rosa stayed in the house.
No adult administered medicine alone.
Sophie’s doctor explained every pill directly to her.
She learned the names, purposes, and colors.
Knowledge became part of safety.
Rivers Trucking survived the financial audit.
The company became smaller.
Alejandro lost several contracts.
Some investors left.
Employees elected two representatives to the board.
Sophie’s trust received shares reflecting the stolen investment.
Alejandro remained chief executive but no longer possessed total control.
He found the change uncomfortable.
That was one reason he knew it was necessary.
One evening, Sophie asked about Marissa.
“Did Mom know Valerie would marry you?”
“No.”
“Would she be mad?”
“Yes.”
“At you?”
“Yes.”
Sophie thought for a moment.
“Are you mad at yourself?”
“Every day.”
“That sounds tiring.”
Alejandro almost laughed.
“It is.”
“Grandma says being sorry means doing better, not being sad forever.”
“Grandma is usually right.”
Rosa called from the kitchen.
“Usually?”
Sophie smiled.
The ordinary moment felt like a victory.
Later, Alejandro opened Marissa’s mother-daughter journal.
He had avoided reading the personal pages.
A letter addressed to him appeared near the end.
Alejandro,
You trust people because you want to believe loyalty can be earned through generosity.
Sometimes it can.
Sometimes generosity only gives dishonest people more access.
Do not become cruel.
Just learn to look.
If I cannot raise Sophie, love her enough to believe her even when the truth makes you ashamed.
Alejandro closed the journal.
He had failed that test once.
