CHAPTER 1 — THE MOMENT THE ROOM FROZE

The boy stood in the center of the grand hall like the celebration no longer belonged to him.
Golden chandeliers shimmered above him. Glasses paused mid-air. Music had already died, yet the silence that replaced it felt heavier than sound.
At first, people smiled awkwardly—thinking it was a child’s mistake.
“Sweetheart,” a woman whispered, stepping forward carefully. “What did you just say?”
The boy’s hands trembled. His eyes were locked on the groom.
“I saw him,” he said again, voice cracking. “I saw him with Mommy… before she disappeared.”
A ripple of confusion swept through the crowd.
The groom—Caleb Ward—let out a short laugh, too sharp to feel real.
“This is ridiculous,” he said, adjusting his cufflinks. “He’s a child. He’s confused.”
But the boy shook his head violently.
“I’m not confused!” he shouted. “You told her not to tell anyone. You said she would be safe if she stayed quiet!”
The bride stepped back slightly, her face tightening.
“Caleb… what is he talking about?”
That was when the boy reached into his tiny pocket.
And pulled out a folded photograph.
A woman—smiling faintly—standing next to Caleb Ward… in a place no one recognized.

The room didn’t just go silent.
It collapsed into it.
