Chapter 17 - GUILTY
The courtroom filled before the judge arrived.
Marcus stood beside his attorneys.
He looked toward Sarah.
She did not look away.
The jury entered.
The foreperson held the verdict forms.
On the charge of attempted murder of Sarah Carter, Marcus Kane was found guilty.
On the charge of kidnapping Lily Carter, he was found guilty.
On three counts of child endangerment, guilty.
Kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, conspiracy, assault, witness intimidation, and attempted destruction of evidence.
Guilty.
Each word removed another piece of the life Marcus had built from fear.
Judge Kane was later convicted of conspiracy, obstruction of justice, bribery, and abuse of office.
She received thirty-eight years in federal prison.
Malcolm received twenty-four years after cooperating.
Marcus received life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
At sentencing, Sarah delivered a statement.
She did not describe herself as his wife.
She used her own name.
“For seven years, you convinced me that isolation was protection.”
“You told me fear was respect.”
“You taught my daughter that love meant watching every word.”
Sarah glanced toward Lily, who watched from a secure room through video.
“But Lily learned something you never understood.”
“She learned that home is not where someone orders you to stay.”
“It is where someone opens the door.”
Nathan spoke after her.
“I spent years believing Sarah chose silence.”
“In truth, silence had been chosen for both of us.”
He looked at Marcus.
“You did not destroy our family.”
“You delayed our reunion.”
Marcus showed no emotion until Lily’s recorded statement played.
She sat beside a child advocate holding the silver bracelet.
“I carried Owen and Ethan because they were little.”
“I went to Uncle Nathan because Mommy said he fixed hearts.”
Lily looked down at the bracelet.
“Daddy said nobody would believe us.”
“But Uncle Nathan did.”
Marcus lowered his head.
The judge terminated his parental rights permanently.
Sarah’s marriage to him was dissolved.
She reclaimed the surname Pierce.
Lily chose to use it too.
The twins became Owen Pierce and Ethan Pierce.
Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.
Sarah stopped beside Nathan.
One reporter asked whether she forgave her brother for abandoning her.
Sarah looked at Nathan before answering.
