Chapter 2: The Memory Hidden in Pain
The ballroom erupted into chaos.
“Call a doctor!”
“What is happening to her?”
But Clara didn’t look scared.
For the first time in years, she looked awake.
The boy stood still, holding her hand gently as if afraid she might vanish.
“I didn’t do anything,” he whispered. “I just remembered.”
“Remembered what?” her father demanded.
The boy’s voice trembled.
“I don’t know… but her legs… they’re not gone.”
Silence fell again.
Clara suddenly inhaled sharply.
Pain shot through her body—and she cried out.
But she didn’t let go.
“It hurts,” she whispered.
The boy nodded quickly. “That means it’s coming back.”
Her father stepped closer, shaken. “That’s impossible. The doctors said—”
“They said she would never feel anything again,” the boy interrupted, “but they were wrong.”
And then it happened.
Clara’s right foot moved.
Not imagined.
Not twitching.
Moved.
The ballroom exploded in shock.
But in the far corner, a man in a dark suit quietly stepped back, already speaking into his phone.
“Confirm subject 07 has reactivated.”
The boy looked up sharply.
