Chapter 8 - VANESSA’S PRICE

Vanessa contacted Dana the next morning.
Not me.
She wanted immunity.
Dana told her she did not control criminal prosecutors.
Vanessa wanted protection anyway.
She had documents.
Emails.
Recordings.
Enough, she claimed, to destroy Marcus.
I didn’t trust her.
Neither did Dana.
But evidence does not require a good person to deliver it.
We met in a conference room with Vanessa’s attorney present.
She looked nothing like the woman who attacked me.
No diamonds.
No cream coat.
No confidence.
Her first words were.
“I didn’t know about the cameras.”
I laughed.
“That’s your opening?”
She looked at me.
“I know what you think of me.”
“You attacked me while I was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“You slept with my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You helped him build a fake medical record.”
Her face tightened.
“Yes.”
“Then don’t worry about what I think.”
She accepted that.
Vanessa placed a flash drive on the table.
“Marcus has been moving money through your name for years.”
“We know some of it.”
“Not the part he’s hiding.”
Priya joined remotely.
Vanessa explained.
NBH Holdings was only one entity.
There were six.
Three tied to me.
Two tied to Marcus’s mother.
One tied to a dead business partner.
Millions moved through them.
Some legitimate.
Some not.
“What kind of not?”
Dana asked.
Vanessa hesitated.
“Political payments.”
“Bribes?”
“I don’t know what prosecutors will call them.”
“Then describe them.”
“Consulting contracts that weren’t consulting.”
“Land approvals followed.”
“Inspection problems disappeared.”
“Competitors withdrew bids.”
I stared.
Hale Communities was not just a marriage asset.
It might be a criminal enterprise.
“Why are you telling us now?”
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“Because Marcus told me I would take the blame.”
I almost smiled.
“You thought you were special.”
Her eyes met mine.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
She continued.
“I thought he did those things to you because he didn’t love you.”
“And now?”
“I think he does it to whoever becomes inconvenient.”
That was the closest Vanessa came to understanding.
Then she described Project Quiet House.
The security company did more than install cameras.
They followed me.
Logged my movements.
Recorded who I met.
Photographed Dana’s office before I hired her.
My stomach dropped.
“How?”
“You had a consultation six months before filing.”
I remembered.
I had driven there.
Sat in the parking lot.
Then left without entering.
Marcus knew.
The investigator photographed me from across the street.
That night, he became unusually kind.
Flowers.
Dinner.
An apology.
I stayed.
It had worked.
Dana asked Vanessa.
“What else?”
She looked at me.
“He has a file on your father.”
I froze.
“What kind of file?”
“Financial records.”
“Old rulings.”
“Personal information.”
“He started it after you became pregnant.”
“Why?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because he thought you might contact Elias.”
Marcus had prepared for my father too.
Then Vanessa added.
“And there’s one recording Marcus never meant anyone else to hear.”
“What recording?”
May you like
She looked directly at me.
“The night he explained what would happen if you tried to leave with the baby.”
