Chapter 17 - THE BIRTHDAY CARDS

I took the cards home.

Did not call Elias.

Not yet.

I opened the oldest first.

Nora,

I know you are angry.

I am too.

That does not change that I love you.

If you ever need me, you do not have to apologize first.

Dad.

The second.

Happy birthday.

I hope Marcus is treating you well.

I hope you are happy.

My door remains open even if you never use it.

Dad.

The third was longer.

Nora,

I am beginning to worry that you have not responded because Marcus may be preventing contact.

I hope I am wrong.

I will not interfere with your marriage.

But I will always come if you call.

Always.

I stopped reading.

For seven years, I believed my father’s silence confirmed rejection.

He had not been silent.

Marcus had filtered reality.

Phone calls.

Cards.

Money.

Doctors.

Therapists.

Friends.

He did not simply isolate me physically.

He curated what reached me.

That night, Elias came over.

I placed the cards on the table.

He stared.

“Where did you get those?”

“Margaret.”

His face changed.

“You never saw them.”

“No.”

He sat down slowly.

“I thought you threw them away.”

“I thought you never wrote.”

For a while, we simply looked at the wasted years sitting between us in envelopes.

Then Elias said.

“I should have come.”

“I might have sent you away.”

“I should have risked that.”

I nodded.

Maybe he should have.

Maybe I would have hated him.

Maybe Marcus would have used it.

There was no clean version of the past.

Only lessons.

Then I opened the final card.

Written the year before I filed.

Nora,

I saw you at the hospital fundraiser last week.

You looked at me and then looked away.

I wanted to cross the room.

I didn’t.

I thought respecting your choice was love.

I am beginning to think love sometimes requires knocking on the door anyway.

Dad.

I cried.

“So why didn’t you?”

He smiled sadly.

“Cowardice with good vocabulary.”

I laughed through tears.

Then I handed him Samuel.

“Here.”

He held his grandson.

The past did not disappear.

But it stopped controlling the room.

The next morning, prosecutors charged Marcus with additional counts related to document fraud and witness intimidation.

Gregory Sloan faced separate proceedings.

Dr. Mercer’s medical license was suspended pending final review.

Vanessa prepared to testify.

Olivia prepared to testify.

Margaret agreed to authenticate the birthday cards and fake letters.

People often ask when Marcus lost.

It wasn’t one moment.

He lost in pieces.

Every person he treated like a tool eventually became a witness.

And every document he created to control someone eventually became a map back to him.
