Chapter 6: The Recording

I didn't tell Alex about my conversation with Valerie.

Not yet.

Because for the first time in months...

I wanted information before emotion.

I wanted proof.

Not promises.

Not apologies.

Not tears.

Proof.

Mark helped me.

He contacted me after his shift.

"I found something."

I met him outside the fire station.

He looked nervous.

"What is it?"

"The elevator rescue was recorded."

My heart jumped.

"Security camera?"

He nodded.

"The department requested the footage because there was a question about the rescue order."

My hands shook.

"Can we see it?"

Mark hesitated.

"Lucy..."

"What?"

"You need to be prepared."

I watched the video.

And nothing could have prepared me.

The footage was silent.

But silence sometimes told the truth better than words.

The elevator doors opened.

Firefighters appeared.

Alex stepped forward.

He looked inside.

He saw everyone.

Including me.

The video zoomed slightly.

His eyes moved.

From Valerie...

to the back corner.

To me.

For three seconds...

he looked directly at me.

Three seconds.

Enough time.

Enough awareness.

Enough choice.

Then he turned away.

I covered my mouth.

Mark looked down.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"No."

I wiped my tears.

"I'm not crying because he didn't see me."

May you like

I looked at the screen.

"I'm crying because he did."
