Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Rescue

I met Valerie two days later.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed answers.

We sat across from each other in a small coffee shop.

The woman who had been the center of my marriage for months.

The woman my husband always defended.

She looked different from what I expected.

Not evil.

Not cruel.

Just calm.

That almost made it worse.

"You hate me," she said.

I didn't answer.

Because hate required energy.

And I was tired.

"I don't know what I feel."

Valerie looked down.

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

She looked up.

"You don't know what it feels like to watch your husband choose someone else while your child is fighting to survive."

Her expression changed.

For the first time...

she looked ashamed.

"I know."

My eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

She took a deep breath.

"Lucy, Alex and I..."

She stopped.

"Alex and I were together before you."

"I know."

"No."

Her voice became quieter.

"You don't know everything."

The air around me felt heavier.

"We never really ended things."

My fingers tightened around my coffee cup.

"What?"

"We stopped dating."

She swallowed.

"But we stayed close."

I laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

"Close."

"Lucy..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Say it."

Valerie looked away.

"We were emotionally involved."

There it was.

The truth.

The thing everyone knew except me.

My husband hadn't cheated in one moment.

He had been leaving me slowly.

Day by day.

Excuse by excuse.

Appointment by appointment.

"Why tell me now?"

Valerie's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I almost watched you die."

That caught me off guard.

"What?"

"In that elevator..."

She looked down.

"I saw you."

My heart stopped.

"You saw me?"

She nodded.

"Before Alex reached me."

The words hit like a punch.

"What happened?"

Valerie whispered:

"I told him to help me first."

Silence.

I stared at her.

"You what?"

"I panicked."

She wiped her eyes.

"I was scared."

"And my daughter?"

Valerie closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

My voice became colder.

"You don't."

She looked at me.

"I saw your face."

A tear fell.

"And I knew exactly what I was doing."

For the first time...

Valerie wasn't the woman I hated.

She was the person who confirmed my worst fear.

My husband didn't accidentally abandon me.

He chose to.
