Chapter 9 - THE RACE TO THE RUNWAY

Federal agents surrounded the private airport.

The medical jet was already moving toward the runway.

Agent Hale ordered air traffic control to block its departure.

The pilot ignored the instruction.

Two federal vehicles crossed the taxiway.

The jet stopped less than fifty yards from them.

Brandon emerged from the cabin with both hands raised.

He wore medical gloves.

“This is an emergency evacuation.”

Hale ordered him onto the ground.

Brandon refused.

“My father is critically ill.”

“Then he will receive medical care from independent physicians.”

A medical team entered the plane.

They found William Prescott unconscious on a stretcher.

His blood pressure was dangerously low.

There were fresh injection marks on his arm.

Ethan was not aboard.

Neither was Judge Keller.

Brandon was arrested for kidnapping, obstruction, and conspiracy.

His arrogance returned before the handcuffs were secured.

“You have no idea what you are interrupting.”

Hale leaned close.

“I am interrupting your family business.”

Margaret was arrested at the estate.

Her attorney arrived with an emergency order demanding her release.

The order had been signed by Judge Keller six hours after he disappeared.

That mistake exposed the entire arrangement.

Federal investigators traced the electronic signature to a computer inside Brandon’s office.

The Prescott family had been manufacturing legal documents whenever they needed them.

William was transported to a federal medical center.

Tests revealed high levels of sedatives in his blood.

He had not suffered a disabling stroke.

He had been drugged for nearly eighteen months.

When he woke, he asked for Emily.

She entered his room cautiously.

William looked much older than the man in their wedding photographs.

His hands shook.

His voice was barely audible.

“I am sorry.”

Emily stood at the foot of the bed.

“You knew?”

“I suspected Ethan was hurting you.”

“Why did you not help me?”

“I tried.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“Margaret took my phone.”

Emily looked at me.

The same method.

The same isolation.

The same threats.

William explained that he had discovered false patient records inside the Haven Foundation.

Women had been committed after threatening wealthy husbands, politicians, and donors.

Some were pressured to sign away property.

Others were threatened with the loss of their children.

William prepared to contact federal authorities.

Margaret found out.

She replaced his physician.

She announced that he had suffered a stroke.

Then she kept him sedated.

“Who helped her?” Hale asked.

William closed his eyes.

“Judges.”

“Which judges?”

“Raymond Keller and two others.”

“Politicians?”

“Yes.”

“Police?”

William hesitated.

“Yes.”

Detective Monroe’s removal from the case suddenly made sense.

Captain Wallace was questioned.

His bank records showed monthly transfers from a Prescott company.

He was arrested before sunset.

The Haven clinics were placed under federal control.

Thirty-seven patient files were immediately flagged for review.

Nine women were released within twenty-four hours.

Several had been held without valid court orders.

The story spread nationwide.

Margaret’s smiling photographs were replaced by images of her in handcuffs.

Ethan remained missing.

His passport had not been used.

His car was found near a lake.

Inside were bloodstained clothes belonging to Judge Keller.

Police divers searched the water.

They found no body.

That evening, a secure courier delivered a package to Emily.

There was no return address.

Inside was her stolen phone.

The screen was cracked.

A single video had been added.

Ethan sat in an unfamiliar room.

Judge Keller was tied to a chair behind him.

Ethan looked directly into the camera.

“Emily, your mother has taken everything from me.”

He smiled.

“So I am going to take the one thing she cannot replace.”

The video ended.

My phone rang immediately.

General Cole’s voice was tense.

“Victoria, your convoy was attacked outside Fort Liberty.”

My heart stopped.

“Who was inside?”

“Brigadier General Reeves.”

May you like

Daniel had been helping me from the beginning.

And now his vehicle was burning beside the highway.
