Chapter 7 - THE CODE IN THE VIDEO

I watched Lena’s video twelve times.

Every movement mattered.

She touched her temple in a three-two-one pattern.

Then she looked toward the left side of the room whenever she said Margaret’s name.

A low mechanical sound repeated every fourteen seconds.

Emily recognized it.

“The old textile mill.”

She sat forward.

“There is a freight elevator that makes that sound.”

The Prescott family owned an abandoned textile property north of Charlotte.

Ethan had taken Emily there once for a charity photography campaign.

The building was supposedly empty.

Special Agent Hale refused to act on a guess.

He sent technicians to analyze the video.

They found traces of red brick dust on Lena’s sleeve.

A faded number was visible on the wall behind her.

Building permits connected that number to the Prescott textile property.

Hale requested a federal search warrant.

While he waited, the Prescotts issued another public statement.

Margaret appeared before cameras outside the Haven Foundation.

She wore white.

Her voice trembled at carefully selected moments.

“Our family is being targeted by a woman using her military prestige to settle a personal disagreement.”

She called Emily a beloved but troubled daughter-in-law.

She called Ethan a victim of false accusations.

She called me dangerous.

Reporters repeated every word.

Several cable networks showed photographs of my medals while questioning whether military officers held too much influence in civilian life.

My email filled with threats.

General Cole placed me on temporary administrative duty.

He did not remove my command.

But he warned me that pressure was building in Washington.

“Victoria, someone called the Secretary’s office.”

“Margaret?”

“Someone more powerful.”

“Senator Prescott?”

“He is reportedly incapacitated.”

“Reportedly.”

General Cole became quiet.

“What are you suggesting?”

“I think the public story about William Prescott may be false.”

“Be careful.”

“I am.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“You are disciplined.”

“That is not always the same thing.”

The warrant for the textile mill was approved at 2:14 in the morning.

Federal agents entered before dawn.

They found Lena bound to a chair on the third floor.

She was dehydrated but alive.

Two hired guards were arrested.

Both had worked for Brandon’s security company.

In the basement, agents discovered a recording studio used to create false confession videos.

They also found medical clothing, forged prescription labels, and copies of court seals.

Agent Hale called me from the scene.

“This is organized.”

“How organized?”

“Enough that I am no longer discussing details over the phone.”

Lena was taken to a secure federal location.

Her first words to Hale were about the memory card.

“The card was a copy.”

The original remained inside the Prescott estate.

She had hidden it in a place Brandon would never search.

Inside Senator William Prescott’s wheelchair.

Emily stared at me when Hale repeated this.

“How could she reach his wheelchair?”

Lena had cleaned the private west wing for years.

She claimed the senator was not recovering from a stroke.

He was being sedated.

Margaret controlled his doctors, his visitors, and his legal affairs.

William Prescott had tried to expose the Haven Foundation before his supposed illness.

Then he disappeared from public view.

The situation changed instantly.

We were no longer only protecting Emily.

An elderly former senator might be imprisoned inside his own home.

Hale began preparing a second warrant.

Before he could submit it, Judge Keller vanished.

His home was empty.

His car was found at the airport.

Flight records showed he had boarded a private jet owned by Prescott Strategic Consulting.

The jet was headed toward the Cayman Islands.

Hale contacted federal aviation authorities.

The plane changed course.

It landed at a private airfield in South Carolina.

Agents arrived eleven minutes too late.

The jet was empty.

There was blood on one of the seats.

And Judge Keller’s phone lay on the floor with a final unsent message.

MARGARET KNOWS THE COLONEL FOUND OUT ABOUT WILLIAM.
