Chapter 15 - RICHARD TELLS THE WHOLE TRUTH
Richard requested a meeting with investigators.
No deal had been offered.
He went anyway.
Evelyn obtained a summary later through the civil case.
Richard admitted driving aggressively.
He admitted passing several vehicles before the crash.
He admitted seeing the truck swerve in his mirror.
He claimed he did not know whether his maneuver directly caused the collision.
Accident reconstruction experts would decide that.
Then he admitted the cover-up.
The witness payment.
The investigator.
The false travel story.
The company money.
The Monaco account.
He admitted Victoria helped.
He admitted Brooke received money she did not earn.
And finally, he admitted something that mattered only to me.
“I treated my son’s trauma like an accusation.”
The investigator asked.
“What do you mean?”
Richard answered.
“Every time Caleb panicked, it reminded me of the crash.”
“So you avoided him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I felt guilty.”
I stopped reading.
For months, Richard had told Caleb to get over the symptoms because Caleb’s fear forced him to face himself.
It had never been about toughness.
It had been about guilt.
I called him.
He answered immediately.
“Emma.”
“I read the interview.”
Silence.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought you would leave.”
I almost laughed.
“So instead you made sure I eventually had to.”
He began crying.
“I know.”
For once, I let the silence stay.
Then I said.
“You owe Caleb an explanation.”
“I know.”
“Not to make yourself feel better.”
“I understand.”
“His therapist decides when.”
“Yes.”
“And if he never wants to hear it?”
Richard’s voice broke.
“Then I live with that.”
That was the first sentence that sounded like responsibility.
Not enough to save us.
Enough to matter.
The accident reconstruction report came three weeks later.
Richard’s Range Rover had likely caused the truck to alter its path.
But investigators could not establish beyond reasonable doubt that his specific maneuver alone caused the bus rollover.
Criminal traffic charges were limited.
The cover-up and financial crimes were another matter.
Richard faced consequences.
Victoria did too.
But no courtroom could answer the question Caleb cared about most.
