Chapter 10 - CALEB’S QUESTION

I did not tell Caleb immediately.
His therapist helped me decide what he needed to know.
Not the money.
Not the legal cover-up.
Only the fact that his father had been driving nearby and may have contributed to the chain of events.
Aaron warned me.
“Children often turn information like this against themselves.”
He was right.
When we told Caleb, his first question was not about Richard.
It was.
“Did Dad crash because he was coming to see me?”
My heart broke.
“No.”
I took his hands.
“No, sweetheart.”
“He was going somewhere else.”
Caleb stared at the carpet.
“Did he hurt Jonah?”
“We don’t know exactly what happened.”
I said.
“But Dad made a very bad choice afterward.”
“What?”
“He hid information.”
Caleb looked toward Aaron.
Then back at me.
“Why?”
“Because he was scared.”
Caleb laughed once.
A bitter little sound no child should know how to make.
“So when Dad is scared, everyone has to understand.”
I stopped breathing.
“But when I’m scared, I embarrass everybody.”
Aaron looked at me.
I had no defense for Richard.
“No.”
I said.
“You were treated unfairly.”
Caleb’s eyes filled.
Then he asked.
“Does Dad know I heard Jonah crying?”
My throat closed.
“Yes.”
“Then why did he tell me to get over it?”
I pulled him against me.
He resisted for half a second.
Then collapsed.
For almost ten minutes, my son cried into my shoulder.
Not like a twelve-year-old trying to be brave.
Like the child he still was.
That night, Richard called.
I did not let him speak to Caleb.
“You told him?”
He asked.
“Yes.”
“You had no right.”
I almost laughed.
“I’m his mother.”
“I wanted to tell him myself.”
“When?”
Silence.
“After liquidation?”
“After the divorce?”
“After he turned eighteen?”
Richard’s voice hardened.
“You are enjoying this.”
That sentence extinguished my last sympathy.
“You think this is enjoyable?”
“You’ve wanted control for years.”
“No.”
I said.
“I wanted a husband.”
I looked toward Caleb’s closed door.
“What I had was a man who believed every consequence was an attack.”
I ended the call.
The next morning, Evelyn filed an amended custody petition.
Not for revenge.
For protection.
Supervised contact.
Mandatory therapy.
Full disclosure of the crash investigation.
And one more thing.
A request for an independent review of every payment Richard authorized after the accident.
That request uncovered another transfer.
One million dollars.
Recipient.
Victoria Arden.
