Chapter 4: Learning to Live Again

Three years later.
Boston.
Autumn painted the city in shades of gold and amber.
A cold breeze swept between the office buildings as Lily pushed through the revolving doors of the architectural firm where she now worked.
A tray of coffee balanced carefully in her hands.
A life carefully balanced in her heart.
She had moved thousands of miles away from Seattle.
Even farther from the wedding that never happened.
Her phone vibrated.
She set the coffees down beside her drafting table before checking the message.
Victoria:
Thinking of you today.
Good luck with your presentation.
Love, Mom.
Lily stared at the final word.
Mom.
Three years earlier, it would have shattered her.
Now...
It simply felt unfamiliar.
Not painful.
Just new.
Their relationship had grown slowly.
Carefully.
Emails.
Occasional lunches.
Long conversations that sometimes ended in tears.
They were rebuilding something neither of them had ever truly possessed.
A mother.
A daughter.
Julian was different.
After the wedding, he accepted a position in London overseeing the European division of the family company.
An ocean separated them now.
They exchanged short birthday messages.
Nothing more.
Distance had become the only mercy either of them understood.
Lily typed her reply.
Thanks, Victoria.
I think we're finally ready for today.
Hope you're doing well.
She slipped the phone back into her pocket.
On her desk stood a single framed photograph.
Just her.
Standing on a mountain trail.
Smiling.
No engagement ring.
No Julian beside her.
She picked up her stylus and turned back toward the blueprints covering her desk.
Life hadn't given her the future she dreamed about.
It had destroyed it.
But sometimes...

The strongest buildings aren't the ones that never crack.
They're the ones rebuilt on stronger foundations after everything else has fallen apart.
