Chapter 3: Letting Go of the Future

That night...
Victoria's estate felt less like a home...
and more like a cemetery for the life they had planned.
Julian stood alone on the back terrace.
Moonlight stretched across the endless gardens.
He couldn't remember how long he'd been staring into the darkness.
Behind him...
The terrace doors opened.
Lily stepped outside.
The engagement ring still rested on her finger.
For a long moment...
She simply looked at it.
Then she slowly removed it.
A pale circle remained where the diamond had once promised forever.
She walked toward Julian.
He heard her footsteps.
His shoulders tightened.
"I'm leaving tomorrow."
Her voice sounded empty.
"My adoptive parents are flying in from Seattle."
"They're helping me pack."
Julian finally turned around.
Three sleepless nights had hollowed his face.
His eyes were bloodshot.
His smile was gone.
The woman standing before him was supposed to become his wife.
Instead...
She had become the sister he never knew existed.
"I don't know how to look at you anymore."
His voice almost broke.
"I still love you."
He swallowed painfully.
"But the love we had..."
"It has to die."
His eyes filled with tears he refused to let fall.
"And I don't know how to bury it without burying part of myself."
Lily stepped closer.
Not close enough to touch him.
Never that close again.
She gently placed the engagement ring on the cold stone railing between them.
"We cut it out."
Her voice remained steady.
"We stay away from each other."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"For a long time."
Another pause.
"Maybe forever."
Julian lowered his gaze.
The diamond sparkled beneath the moonlight.
Then he looked back at Lily.
For the first time...
He noticed his mother's eyes.
His own jawline.
Features that had always felt strangely familiar.
Now he knew why.
He nodded once.
Slowly.
"I'm sorry."
The words were barely audible.
Lily gave the smallest nod.
"So am I."
Neither of them moved.
Neither of them reached across the distance.
Some endings don't happen with slammed doors.
May you like
Sometimes...
They happen in complete silence.
