Chapter 18 - ELEANOR’S FINAL COLLECTION

At eighty-three, Mom announced a new collection.

Everyone assumed she would recreate the Midnight gowns.

She refused.

“I am not spending my return copying my younger self.”

The collection was called Daylight.

Bright gold.

Soft green.

Ivory.

Sky blue.

No midnight fabric appeared.

Ava asked why.

“Midnight was the room they kept me in.”

“I want people to see what came after.”

Mom recruited twelve young designers.

Each name appeared on every label.

Pattern makers received credit.

Seamstresses received royalties.

The contracts were written in plain language.

Workers reviewed them with independent attorneys.

The collection debuted inside the restored tailoring floor.

The old fire marks remained visible behind glass.

Not as decoration.

As evidence.

I watched Mom walk onto the stage.

She moved slowly with her walnut cane.

The audience rose.

She lifted one hand.

“Please sit.”

“I waited forty-one years to speak.”

“I do not want applause using half the time.”

The room laughed.

Mom told them she did not return to prove Henry Mercer wrong.

“He knew I was talented.”

“That was why he stole from me.”

She looked toward the young designers.

“Never mistake another person’s recognition of your value for a willingness to respect it.”

The final gown entered.

Ava wore it.

Pale blue silk.

Inside the lining were ninety-four names.

Every woman from the original ledger.

The audience could not see them.

But everyone knew they were there.

That was the difference.

Hidden did not have to mean erased.
