Chapter 16 - THE WOMAN MY MOTHER SAVED

A letter arrived from a woman named Claire Dalton.

She was seventy-eight.

Her mother, Beatrice, had worked inside the tailoring department.

Beatrice died believing Mom hated her.

She had testified that Mom started the fire.

The letter included a confession Beatrice wrote before death.

Henry threatened to report my husband to immigration.

I lied.

Eleanor looked at me inside the police station and knew.

She never exposed me.

Mom read the letter in silence.

“Did you know Beatrice lied?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you say anything?”

“She had three children.”

“So did you.”

Mom looked at me.

“I kept believing protecting other mothers would somehow protect me too.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

The answer carried no bitterness.

Only clarity.

The Morrow Hands Foundation created a legal fund for workers pressured into false testimony.

Not to erase responsibility.

To recognize the conditions surrounding choices.

At the first meeting, Mom said:

“Power likes to isolate people and then judge what they do alone.”

“We will examine both the action and the room it happened in.”

That became the foundation’s guiding principle.
