Chapter 3 - THE CHILD WHO WAS NEVER ACCEPTED

At the hospital, Olivia was rushed into a private maternity unit.
The trauma had triggered early contractions.
Doctors gave her medication to slow labor while monitoring the baby.
Ethan remained beside her.
His tuxedo shirt was torn.
Blood from the terrace covered one sleeve.
Olivia watched him through half-closed eyes.
“You lost everything tonight.”
He held her hand.
“I almost lost you.”
“That is not what I meant.”
“I know.”
Ethan had spent thirty-seven years as Victoria Hartwell’s only acknowledged son.
He had been raised to inherit Hartwell Global.
The company owned hotels, private hospitals, development firms, and luxury residences across the world.
Victoria controlled the family trust.
She could remove Ethan’s voting rights if he acted against her.
The threat on the terrace had been real.
By choosing Olivia, he had surrendered control of the empire.
At least, that was what Victoria believed.
Olivia touched her stomach.
The baby shifted again.
Relief crossed her face.
“Your mother never wanted this child.”
Ethan looked away.
Victoria’s hatred had begun the day Olivia announced her pregnancy.
At first, it appeared as polite concern.
Victoria suggested Olivia was too physically fragile to carry a child.
Then she recommended private doctors loyal to the Hartwell family.
When Olivia refused, Victoria questioned the baby’s paternity.
She hired an investigator.
She spread rumors among board members.
She even arranged a dinner where an old girlfriend of Ethan’s appeared unexpectedly.
Olivia survived each insult.
But the terrace had been different.
Victoria had not merely wanted her gone.
She had wanted the baby erased from the bloodline.
“Why tonight?” Ethan asked.
Olivia stared at the ceiling.
“I found something in your father’s library.”
Ethan became still.
His father, Charles Hartwell, had died ten years earlier after falling from a sailing yacht.
Victoria claimed he had been drinking.
The body was recovered two days later.
No investigation ever challenged her account.
“What did you find?”
“A letter.”
Olivia told him she had been helping Rosa organize documents before the penthouse charity dinner.
Inside a locked drawer, she discovered a sealed envelope addressed to Ethan.
The handwriting belonged to Charles.
The letter stated that Victoria had altered the Hartwell family trust after his death.
Charles intended for Ethan to receive control when he turned thirty-five.
Instead, Victoria used a medical declaration signed by a family doctor to argue that Charles lacked mental capacity when he amended the trust.
The amendment was hidden.
The public version gave Victoria lifetime control.
“There is more,” Olivia whispered.
“Your father created a separate trust for his first grandchild.”
Ethan looked at her stomach.
“How much?”
“Thirty-one percent of Hartwell Global.”
His breath stopped.
That was enough to override Victoria when combined with Ethan’s personal shares.
The unborn child was not a threat to the bloodline.
The baby was a threat to Victoria’s power.
“She knew you found the letter,” Ethan said.
“I confronted her.”
“When?”
“This afternoon.”
Olivia admitted she had taken the letter to Victoria’s private sitting room.
Victoria did not deny it.
She offered Olivia fifty million dollars to leave Ethan before the birth.
Olivia refused.
Victoria then ordered her onto the terrace for what she called a private conversation.
“I thought she wanted to negotiate.”
“She pushed you.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
“She said the city would believe I slipped.”
Ethan’s face became cold.
A nurse entered.
“Mr. Hartwell, Detective Quinn is outside.”
“There is also a federal agent asking to speak with both of you.”
Olivia tightened her grip on Ethan’s hand.
“Rosa sent the recording.”
“How do you know?”
“She told me she would.”
Ethan looked at his wife.
“How long have the two of you been investigating my mother?”
May you like
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Long enough to know your father may not have fallen from that boat.”
