Chapter 10 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOW

Robert Vale had never fled to Switzerland.

He had been living inside a Hartwell-owned private medical facility in Connecticut.

The facility treated wealthy patients whose names never appeared in public records.

Robert had been registered as John Vance.

His medical file described severe neurological damage.

He could not walk.

He could barely speak.

When federal agents found him, he began repeating one sentence.

“She threw Charles first.”

Robert was moved to protective custody.

Dr. Keene examined him.

Old fractures covered his ribs and left arm.

A poorly healed injury at the base of his skull explained his disability.

Someone had beaten him and denied proper treatment.

Victoria had kept him alive for ten years.

Not from compassion.

As leverage.

Robert knew what happened on the yacht.

He also knew where Charles’s body had been moved before authorities recovered it.

The official body had been found in the river two days after the accident.

Robert claimed Charles died on deck.

Victoria struck him with a brass winch handle after he threatened to expose her trust fraud.

Robert tried to intervene.

Victoria struck him too.

Arthur Voss helped move Charles’s body.

They placed it in the water miles from the yacht’s actual route.

Then Voss transported Robert to the private facility.

Victoria told everyone her brother had fled.

Ethan listened to the recorded statement inside the hospital conference room.

Robert’s words were slow and painful.

“She said Charles was weak.”

“She said Ethan would ruin everything.”

“She said family belonged to whoever could control it.”

DNA from the yacht board matched Charles.

Victoria was arrested in her hospital room before noon.

Her leg was in traction.

A bandage covered the cut near her temple.

Detective Quinn read the charges.

Attempted murder.

Kidnapping.

Conspiracy.

Fraud.

Evidence tampering.

And the murder of Charles Hartwell.

Victoria listened without interrupting.

Then she looked toward Ethan.

“You brought strangers into family business.”

“You made murder family business.”

“I protected what your father built.”

“You killed him.”

“He planned to dismantle the company.”

“He planned to remove you.”

Victoria’s voice sharpened.

“Because he had become sentimental.”

“He wanted to give workers board representation.”

“He wanted to sell the private hospitals.”

“He wanted to place the grandchild trust beyond family authority.”

“He understood what you were.”

“No.”

Victoria looked toward Grace’s room.

“He became weak.”

Ethan stepped closer to the bed.

“My daughter weighs four pounds.”

“She needs a machine to help her breathe.”

“And you are still more afraid of her than she will ever be of you.”

Victoria smiled.

“You think legal documents make you strong?”

“The board will never follow you after this scandal.”

“I suspended the board.”

Her smile vanished.

“I froze your accounts.”

“You cannot.”

“I already did.”

“Arthur will reverse it.”

“Arthur was arrested an hour ago.”

Victoria stared at him.

Ethan continued.

“Robert is alive.”

For the first time, real terror entered her eyes.

“That is impossible.”

“You should have checked the facility yourself.”

Victoria looked toward her attorneys.

Neither met her gaze.

They had already begun protecting themselves.

Ethan watched his mother understand that the network around her was collapsing.

She had spent decades purchasing loyalty.

Now everyone she bought was calculating what they could gain by betraying her.

“You chose a maid over your mother,” Victoria whispered.

Ethan looked toward Rosa.

“No.”

“I chose every person you treated as disposable.”

Federal officers handcuffed Victoria to the hospital bed.

As they prepared to move her, she called Ethan’s name.

He stopped at the door.

“You will come back,” she said.

“When Olivia leaves you.”

“When the board turns.”

“When the child becomes sick.”

“You will remember who made you.”

Ethan looked at her for a long moment.

Then he answered.

“You made me afraid.”

May you like

“My wife made me brave enough to admit it.”

He walked out.
