Chapter 7 - THE DOCTOR WITHOUT A LICENSE

Dr. Marcus Hale was arrested at a motel near the Indiana border.
He had purchased a bus ticket under another name.
Police found twenty thousand dollars in cash inside his suitcase.
They also found a passport and a photograph of me entering my obstetrician’s office.
At first, Hale refused to cooperate.
Then the prosecutor showed him the conspiracy charges.
He began talking.
Ryan had contacted him through an underground gambling network.
Hale owed money to the same lender who had financed Ryan’s debts.
He agreed to provide sedatives and false medical statements.
In exchange, Ryan promised to pay him after receiving control of my investment account.
The guardianship petition was only the first stage.
Once Ryan controlled my medical decisions, Hale planned to recommend that I be transferred to a private psychiatric facility after delivery.
The facility existed only on paper.
In reality, it was an abandoned rehabilitation center owned by one of Hale’s former business partners.
I would be isolated.
Ryan would receive temporary custody of the baby.
Then an “accident” would occur during my transfer.
Dad listened to the recorded confession in Sarah Kim’s office.
He did not speak until it ended.
“Was the plan to kill her?”
Sarah answered carefully.
“Hale claims Ryan never used those exact words.”
“What words did he use?”
“He said Emily needed to disappear permanently.”
My father looked toward the window.
The city moved outside as if nothing had changed.
Cars passed.
People crossed sidewalks.
A delivery truck stopped at a red light.
For everyone else, it was an ordinary afternoon.
For us, it was the moment we learned my husband had planned my death.
I placed both hands over my stomach.
My daughter moved beneath my palms.
“She was part of the plan too.”
Sarah nodded.
“Ryan intended to keep the child.”
“Why?”
“Custody would make him appear sympathetic.”
“He also believed your father would pay anything to remain involved in his granddaughter’s life.”
Dad turned around.
“He planned to ransom access to my granddaughter?”
“That is the prosecutor’s theory.”
I felt sick.
Every moment of Ryan’s tenderness became poisoned.
The night he painted the nursery.
The afternoon he bought a stuffed rabbit.
The morning he pressed his ear against my stomach and smiled when the baby kicked.
I had believed those moments proved a piece of the man I loved still existed.
Now I understood.
He had not been preparing for fatherhood.
He had been preparing for ownership.
Sarah warned us that Hale’s testimony would be attacked.
He was a convicted fraudster.
He had accepted money.
He had every reason to blame Ryan.
We still needed evidence connecting Ryan directly to the final plan.
Investigators searched his emails, but most messages were encrypted.
They recovered fragments.
Transfer route.
No hospital cameras.
Mother handles medication.
Colonel must believe she left voluntarily.
The final message remained incomplete.
Detective Brooks believed the rest might be stored on a second device.
Ryan’s main computer showed signs of remote access.
Someone had logged in after his arrest and deleted files.
Only three people knew his password.
Ryan.
Linda.
And Ryan’s younger brother, Kyle.
Kyle had not appeared in any of the statements.
He had not visited Ryan in jail.
He had not contacted the police.
When Detective Brooks went to his apartment, it was empty.
His car was missing.
His phone had been disconnected.
Police issued an alert.
Dad increased security around the house.
For two nights, nothing happened.
On the third night, I woke at 2:13 a.m.
The hallway light was on.
Claire was asleep in the guest room.
Dad was stationed at the base.
Captain Mason had checked the property before midnight.
I heard a soft sound near the kitchen.
A drawer closing.
I reached for the emergency button beside my bed.
Before I could press it, a shadow crossed beneath the bedroom door.
May you like
Someone stopped outside.
The doorknob slowly began to turn.
