Chapter 1 - THE FOOTSTEPS

“No.”

My father’s answer was so quiet that Ryan took a step backward.

Then the heavy footsteps outside the apartment grew louder.

Ryan looked toward the bedroom door.

Linda’s face turned pale.

“What did you do?” Ryan asked.

Dad never took his eyes off him.

“I paid attention.”

Two Chicago police officers entered the apartment with Captain Mason, my father’s military aide, directly behind them.

Dad had sent Mason a message while walking down the hallway.

Possible domestic assault.

Call 911.

Request medical assistance.

Ryan lifted both hands and forced a nervous laugh.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

One of the officers looked at the bruises covering my body.

His expression hardened immediately.

Linda rushed toward the bed and tried to pull the blanket over me.

“She fell in the shower.”

Dad caught Linda’s wrist before she could touch me.

“Do not put your hands on my daughter again.”

Linda yanked herself away.

“You can’t threaten me in my own home.”

“I didn’t threaten you.”

Dad’s voice remained calm.

“I gave you an order.”

The older officer stepped between them.

“Ma’am, move away from the bed.”

Ryan suddenly pointed at me.

“Ask her.”

The room became silent.

Ryan stared directly into my eyes.

He did not have to say anything else.

I knew what that look meant.

He had used it for months.

If you tell anyone, I will make you regret it.

If you leave, I will take the baby.

If your father interferes, I will destroy his career.

My throat tightened.

The officer knelt beside the bed.

“Emily, did your husband cause these injuries?”

Ryan’s eyes remained fixed on me.

Linda folded her arms.

Dad slowly lowered himself beside me.

He did not tell me what to say.

He did not demand the truth.

He only held out his hand.

For the first time in months, someone was offering me a choice instead of giving me an order.

I placed my trembling fingers in his palm.

“Yes.”

The word barely escaped my lips.

Ryan’s expression changed instantly.

“You ungrateful liar.”

He lunged toward the bed.

Dad stepped in front of me, but the officers reached Ryan first.

They forced his arms behind his back.

Ryan shouted as the handcuffs closed around his wrists.

“She’s unstable.”

“She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

“She’s been having delusions.”

Linda began yelling at the officers.

“My son takes care of her.”

“She lies whenever she wants attention.”

The younger officer turned toward her.

“Stop talking.”

Ryan twisted in the officers’ grip and looked over Dad’s shoulder.

His face no longer showed fear.

It showed hatred.

“You think your father can protect you forever?”

Dad moved closer until Ryan had no choice but to look at him.

“She will never need protection from you again.”

The paramedics arrived with a stretcher.

As they lifted me from the bed, pain shot through my ribs.

I cried out.

Dad’s control nearly broke.

His jaw tightened.

His hands curled into fists.

But he did not touch Ryan.

He stayed beside me.

That frightened Ryan more than anger would have.

In the hallway, neighbors stood inside their doorways.

Some looked shocked.

Some looked ashamed.

One elderly woman across the hall covered her mouth when she saw me.

Ryan had spent months telling everyone I was sick.

Now they were seeing what sickness really looked like.

As the paramedics rolled me toward the elevator, Linda followed.

“You’re destroying this family,” she hissed.

I looked at her.

“No.”

My voice was weak, but it was finally mine.

“You already did that.”

The elevator doors began to close.

Ryan shouted from the hallway.

“This isn’t over, Emily.”

Dad stepped into the elevator beside me.

Then he looked directly at my husband.

“Yes, it is.”

The doors closed.

For the first time in months, Ryan disappeared from my sight.

I wanted to believe the nightmare was finished.

Then one of the paramedics examined the dark handprint beside my stomach.

His face became tense.

“We need to move faster.”

Dad looked down at me.

“What’s wrong?”

May you like

The paramedic reached for the radio.

“The baby’s heart rate is dropping.”
