Chapter 7 - The Hospital Trap

Cassidy did not cancel the appointment.
Instead, she changed the rules.
At 9:00 the next morning, she entered St. Catherine Medical Center through the main entrance.
Margaret wanted a private route.
Cassidy refused.
She wanted whoever was watching to believe she had no idea what was coming.
Security followed at a distance.
Martin Cole had quietly filed notices revoking every medical authorization Brendan had ever held.
Cassidy’s actual obstetrician, Dr. Rachel Kim, met her inside.
“I never requested hospital observation.”
“I know.”
“Pierce contacted three departments claiming he was consulting on your case.”
“Can he do that?”
“Not anymore.”
Rachel led Cassidy into a private room.
Medical compliance officers were already waiting.
They had pulled Cassidy’s records.
Several documents had been uploaded overnight.
One claimed she had experienced severe hypertension.
Another said she had become confused during a prenatal consultation.
A third recommended psychiatric observation if she resisted treatment.
Cassidy stared at the screen.
“They were trying to create the condition they needed.”
Rachel nodded.
“If you had arrived alone, staff might have assumed the records were legitimate.”
“And if I objected—”
“Your objection could have been described as agitation.”
Cassidy almost admired the cruelty of it.
It was elegant in the worst possible way.
Make her afraid.
Record the fear.
Call the fear proof.
Rachel opened another record.
“This order came from Pierce’s account.”
Cassidy read it.
TEMPORARY MEDICAL HOLD IF PATIENT ATTEMPTS UNSAFE DISCHARGE.
Margaret swore.
Cassidy looked toward the door.
“Where is Pierce?”
“He canceled his clinic this morning.”
Security was already searching.
At 10:22 a.m., Martin called.
“Cassidy, we found the emergency petition.”
“Where?”
“Cook County probate division.”
“Who filed it?”
“Brendan.”
Her jaw tightened.
“On what grounds?”
“Pregnancy-related cognitive instability.”
Cassidy laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
Martin continued.
“He is asking for temporary authority over your trust interests.”
“Using the unborn child?”
“Yes.”
“And the hearing?”
“Today.”
“What time?”
“One-thirty.”
Cassidy looked at the clock.
Three hours.
The petition was supposed to be secret.
Brendan expected her to be inside a hospital, confused and restrained, while his attorneys told a judge she was too unstable to protect herself.
Instead, Cassidy left through the front doors at 10:37.
By 11:15, she was inside Meridian’s legal command room.
Martin prepared a response.
Margaret contacted outside counsel.
Marcus organized the financial evidence.
Then corporate security called.
They had located Dr. Pierce.
Not at home.
Not at his clinic.
At O’Hare International Airport.
He had booked a one-way flight to Switzerland.
Security could not legally stop him from boarding.
But federal investigators could.
Marcus had already found payments to Pierce crossing state lines through fraudulent invoices.
The referral went out.
At 12:08, Pierce was taken aside before boarding.
At 12:19, Brendan sent Cassidy a text.
You should have stayed at the hospital.
Cassidy stared at the message.
Then another arrived.
You still don’t understand what Protocol 7 actually unlocked.
Cassidy’s heartbeat slowed.
She forwarded the message to Margaret.
Margaret read it twice.
Then her face changed.
“Cassidy.”
“What?”
“Protocol 7 was created by your grandmother.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Margaret looked frightened.
“You know what you were told it was created for.”
Cassidy stared at her.
May you like
Margaret lowered her voice.
“There was another section Evelyn never showed the board.”
