Chapter 15 - The Lowest Point

The signature passed the first electronic comparison.

That did not prove it was genuine.

But it was enough to create doubt.

Victor’s attorneys demanded the board suspend all major actions until ownership could be determined.

The press discovered the dispute within hours.

Headlines exploded across financial media.

SECRET BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS FACES OWNERSHIP CHALLENGE.

PREGNANT HART EXECUTIVE ACCUSED OF ABUSING EMERGENCY POWER.

Cassidy’s private life became public property.

Photos of Brendan and Sloane appeared everywhere.

So did photographs of Cassidy standing soaked on the porch.

Someone had released security footage from the humiliation.

But the clip was edited.

It began after Diane dumped the bucket.

It showed Cassidy saying, “None of your company cards are going to work.”

Without context, she looked cold.

Vindictive.

Powerful enough to punish an entire family after a divorce.

Victor was rewriting the story.

Again.

At noon, three directors told Margaret they would abstain from the Protocol 7 vote.

At two, Meridian’s primary lender requested assurances.

At four, a major acquisition partner delayed closing.

At six, Cassidy received a court notice.

Until the trust dispute was reviewed, extraordinary transfers required dual authorization.

Cassidy still owned her shares on paper.

But every weapon she possessed was being wrapped in legal tape.

Brendan called.

Cassidy almost ignored him.

Then she answered.

“You enjoying this?”

He asked.

“No.”

“I am.”

“I know.”

“You should have taken the divorce settlement.”

“You offered me money that belonged to my own company.”

Brendan laughed.

“You always needed to be smarter than everyone.”

“No.”

“I just needed you to be exactly as stupid as you were.”

His breathing changed.

Cassidy knew she had hit something.

“Victor used you.”

Brendan went silent.

“He paid you before you met me.”

Still silent.

“He promised you Meridian.”

“Shut up.”

“There it is.”

Cassidy closed her eyes.

“You thought you were using him.”

Brendan’s voice cracked with anger.

“You think I was some employee he bought?”

“Yes.”

“You loved me.”

“I did.”

“That means I won.”

“No, Brendan.”

Her voice softened.

“It means I lost something real while you spent years pretending to have it.”

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

Cassidy ended the call.

Then another message arrived.

From Sloane.

I FOUND THE ORIGINAL RECORDING.

Cassidy immediately called her.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Security drove to Sloane’s safe apartment.

The door was unlocked.

The apartment was empty.

Her phone lay on the kitchen counter.

There was no sign of a struggle.

Only one thing had been left deliberately in the center of the table.

The flash drive Cassidy had given her.

It had been snapped in half.

Cassidy stared at the photograph from security.

Margaret stood beside her.

“Victor has her.”

“Maybe.”

“What else could it be?”

Cassidy looked at the broken drive.

Sloane had once told her Brendan underestimated women he thought were afraid.

Cassidy remembered the exact way she said it.

Then she noticed something.

The drive had been broken cleanly.

But Sloane’s silver necklace was missing from the apartment.

A necklace with a tiny memory pendant.

Sloane had shown it to Cassidy once.

It could store four gigabytes.

Cassidy turned toward Daniel.

“She took the real evidence with her.”

“You think she left voluntarily?”

“I think she wants Brendan to believe she was caught.”

Daniel frowned.

“Why?”

Cassidy looked at the clock.

The board vote was scheduled for the next morning.

“Because she found something worth making herself disappear for.”

At that exact moment, an email arrived from an anonymous address.

One attachment.

A photograph of Evelyn Hart’s original trust seal.

And six words.

YOUR GRANDMOTHER EXPECTED THIS DAY TO COME.
