Chapter 6 - The Hearing From My Hospital Bed

Daniel’s lawyer argued that my hospitalization proved I was medically incapacitated.

The cruelty of it was almost impressive.

He caused the emergency.

Then he tried to use the emergency to seize my property.

The hearing happened by video because I was not allowed to leave the hospital.

Daniel appeared from county custody wearing a clean white shirt.

No mud.

No work boots.

No angry face.

He looked like the man I had married.

That was the version everyone trusted.

His attorney spoke first.

“My client is deeply concerned about his wife’s physical and emotional condition.”

I stared at the screen.

Daniel lowered his eyes at exactly the right moment.

The attorney continued.

“Mrs. Hale has displayed increasing paranoia during pregnancy.”

Hannah stood beside my bed.

“Objection.”

The judge nodded.

“Counsel, stay with the financial issue.”

Daniel’s attorney produced the forged psychiatric evaluation.

Then the witnessed trust document.

Then statements from my father.

Not today’s conversation.

Older messages.

Messages where Dad had told Daniel I seemed stressed.

Messages where Daniel replied that he was “trying to protect me.”

Hannah dismantled them one by one.

The doctor was dead.

The signature was disputed.

The witness admitted he had not seen me sign.

Then she submitted something Daniel had not expected.

The hospital report.

Prolonged restraint.

Dehydration.

Malnutrition.

Trauma.

Fetal distress.

Finally, Detective Ortiz provided the court with a certified excerpt from my recordings.

Daniel’s own voice filled the courtroom.

“After Monday, it won’t matter.”

The judge leaned forward.

Daniel stopped pretending to look sad.

Hannah presented the trust language.

“Your Honor, Mr. Hale is not protecting an incapacitated spouse.”

“He is attempting to profit from an incapacity he allegedly caused.”

The judge denied Daniel’s petition.

Then she did something even better.

She froze his access to every jointly held account until ownership could be determined.

Daniel spoke for the first time.

“You can’t do that.”

The judge looked directly at him.

“I just did.”

His lawyer pulled him back.

But the hearing was not finished.

Hannah requested an emergency protective order covering me, the baby, my home, my business interests, and all electronic accounts.

Granted.

She requested preservation of every phone, computer, camera, financial record, and cloud account belonging to Daniel.

Granted.

Then she requested access to one specific account discovered in the trust paperwork.

Account 8814.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Hannah saw it too.

After the hearing ended, I asked her what Account 8814 was.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know yet.”

That evening, Detective Ortiz returned.

Now she knew.

The account contained almost nine hundred thousand dollars.

None of it belonged to Daniel.

Most of it had been transferred from my company.

And one payment, sent six months earlier, had gone directly to Mara.

The memo line contained only two words.

PHASE ONE.
