Chapter 11 - The False Hospital

The company called itself Meridian Recovery Services.

Its website showed peaceful buildings surrounded by trees.

There were photographs of smiling nurses.

Therapy rooms.

Private suites.

A lake.

None of those places belonged to Meridian.

The photographs had been stolen from real clinics.

Meridian had no medical license.

No physicians.

No treatment center.

It existed on paper for one purpose.

Transport.

People.

Detective Ortiz found three prior complaints linked to the company.

Each involved wealthy families trying to control an elderly relative, spouse, or adult child through questionable guardianship arrangements.

None had led to conviction.

This case was different.

Daniel had left a financial trail.

Patricia had left messages.

Mara was talking.

Eric was cooperating.

And I had recordings from inside the dirt.

Still, Meridian’s director, Victor Sloan, had disappeared.

That frightened me.

The prosecutor requested additional security at the hospital.

Deputy Cole began checking the hallway himself.

Two days later, I was moved from obstetric intensive monitoring to a private recovery room.

The baby remained inside me.

Thirty-two weeks became thirty-three.

Every day mattered.

I started physical therapy because my left leg remained weak.

The first time I stood, my knee collapsed.

I grabbed the rail.

My therapist caught me.

I stared at the floor.

Two steps.

That was all I wanted.

Two steps without Daniel’s voice in my head.

I tried again.

One.

Then another.

By the end of the week, I crossed the room.

Hannah visited that afternoon carrying another court order.

My home had officially been placed under my exclusive control.

Daniel was prohibited from entering even after release.

I almost laughed.

“I don’t want that house.”

“You don’t have to keep it.”

“I never want to see that yard again.”

Hannah nodded.

“We can sell it later.”

Then she handed me another document.

My company’s board had voted unanimously to restore every authority Daniel had interfered with.

The stolen funds were being traced.

Accounts were frozen.

The shell companies were collapsing.

For the first time, Daniel was losing the thing he had buried me for.

Control.

That evening, a nurse brought me an envelope.

“No return address.”

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed my hospital entrance.

Taken that morning.

On the back, someone had written four words.

YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.

Deputy Cole immediately locked down the floor.

Security reviewed every camera.

At 7:14 p.m., they found the man who had delivered the envelope.

He wore a baseball cap.

He never showed his full face.

May you like

But his truck appeared in the parking garage.

The license plate belonged to Victor Sloan.
