Chapter One – Christmas Ends Early

Outside the bedroom window, snow drifted quietly across the Harrison estate.

Inside, Sofia wrapped both arms around me.

"Mom... are we going to die?"

Her whisper shattered what little strength I had left.

"No."

I brushed a strand of blonde hair away from her tear-stained face.

"We're leaving."

I didn't know how.

I only knew we couldn't stay.

Someone pounded on the bedroom door.

"Open it!" my mother-in-law shouted.

"You don't get to ruin Christmas and hide!"

Another voice followed.

My brother-in-law, Brian.

"Bring the bank papers. She's lying about where the money is."

I looked toward the small safe hidden inside my suitcase.

The documents proving Sofia's education account remained untouched.

The account Daniel and I had opened together years earlier.

Daniel had never imagined his own family would try to steal it.

I quickly slipped the documents into my coat.

If they destroyed the evidence, they could invent any story they wanted.

The pounding grew louder.

The old wooden frame began to crack.

Sofia buried her face against my shoulder.

Then...

Headlights swept across the snowy driveway.

Several black SUVs rolled through the front gate.

The pounding outside stopped.

Voices drifted downstairs.

"Who invited them?"

"I've never seen those cars before."

"Are they police?"

I walked carefully to the window.

The vehicles parked in perfect formation.

Men and women stepped out wearing tailored black coats instead of uniforms.

No weapons.

No shouting.

Just remarkable discipline.

An older silver-haired gentleman exited the final vehicle.

Even from the second floor, I recognized his posture.

Straight.

Calm.

Patient.

Time had added gray to his hair.

Not weakness.

My father.

Beside him stood my aunt Isabella, once one of the sharpest corporate attorneys in New York.

Behind them came accountants.

Private investigators.

Security professionals.

People who solved problems with evidence instead of threats.

Papa had kept his promise.

He had come.

Not to wage war.

But to make certain no one ever hurt his family again.

Downstairs, the front door opened.

The Christmas party fell completely silent.
