CHAPTER 9 — THE SECRET MY MOTHER LEFT

I read the letter alone.
My mother wrote that she had become pregnant before marrying Vittorio.
My biological father was a young law student named Samuel Mercer.
Mercer.
Daniel’s family name before his grandfather changed it to Hale.
I felt sick.
According to the letter, Samuel died in a car accident before I was born. Vittorio knew I was not his biological child, but married my mother and raised me as his own.
He never told me.
The letter should have been delivered after my mother’s death, but it disappeared from her estate.
Margaret had somehow obtained it.
When I showed my father, he closed his eyes.
“It is true,” he said.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because biology never mattered to me.”
“It mattered enough for you to hide it.”
“I feared you would believe you were less mine.”
I paced the room.
“How did Margaret get this?”
My father examined the envelope.
“Your mother’s estate attorney was Martin Keane’s father.”
The connection was older than my marriage.
Margaret had discovered that I shared biological ancestry with the Hale family through Samuel Mercer. She used that information to convince Daniel that my inheritance, Sofia’s trust, and parts of the Russo estate might someday be challenged.
Her plan was not only to steal Sofia’s savings.
She wanted to prove I was not Vittorio’s legal heir.
Then she intended to force a settlement worth millions.
Daniel had married a woman he believed was an orphan.
Years later, his mother learned I was tied to a wealthy empire and transformed our marriage into a financial opportunity.
I confronted Daniel through another jail visit.
“Did you marry me because of my father?”
“No. I didn’t know who you were.”
“Did you stay because of him?”
His silence answered me.
“I loved you,” he said.
“Until loving me became less valuable than owning me.”
“That isn’t fair.”
“Was the custody petition fair?”
He lowered his head.
I placed my wedding ring on the counter between us.
“I am filing for divorce.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with panic.
“Elena, don’t do this.”
“You already ended our marriage in front of the fireplace.”
I stood to leave.
He called after me.
“My mother has the original letter for a reason.”
I stopped.
“What reason?”
“She planned to prove Sofia wasn’t Vittorio’s granddaughter.”
“She isn’t biologically.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
Daniel moved closer to the glass.
“My mother had a second DNA test performed.”
“On whom?”
“On Sofia.”
I could barely breathe.
May you like
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“The results say I am not her biological father.”
