CHAPTER 6 â THE CUSTODY PLAN

Margaret had been building a custody case against me for nearly a year.
Claire showed us copies of emails, handwritten notes, and photographs taken without my knowledge.
There were pictures of me carrying wine at a charity dinner.
Pictures of Sofia crying outside school after she scraped her knee.
Pictures of my prescription bottle after dental surgery.
Each image had been labeled and dated.
Margaret intended to make me look unstable, addicted, and dangerous.
âShe told Daniel that once you were declared unfit, he would control Sofiaâs trust,â Claire explained.
My fatherâs face became stone.
âDid Daniel agree?â
Claire hesitated.
âHe signed an affidavit.â
The document accused me of violent mood swings, substance abuse, and disappearing for days at a time.
Every accusation was false.
But Daniel had signed his name beneath them.
âHe never filed it,â Claire said quickly.
âBecause he was waiting,â I replied.
âFor what?â
âFor the money transfer to succeed.â
If they emptied the account quietly, Daniel could remain married to me. If I resisted or reported them, they would use the affidavit to discredit me and seek custody of Sofia.
Either way, they intended to win.
Claire pressed both hands over her mouth.
âI heard Margaret say Christmas would be the final opportunity. She knew Daniel would be away. She wanted witnesses who would support her version.â
The forty relatives had not been invited only for dinner.
They were meant to become a jury.
Margaret believed family loyalty would transform a public assault into proof that I was unstable.
She almost succeeded.
Detectives searched Margaretâs phone records and found multiple calls to a private custody investigator. They also found a draft petition accusing me of endangering Sofia.
The petition had been prepared by a lawyer named Martin Keane.
Keane represented the Hale company.
He also served on the board of Sofiaâs school.
That explained why the school principal had recently begun asking strange questions about my parenting.
The conspiracy had spread beyond the Christmas house.
My father immediately hired attorneys, but I refused to hide Sofia in one of his guarded estates.
âShe needs normalcy,â I said.
âShe needs security.â
âShe needs to know she is not a prisoner.â
We compromised.
Sofia and I moved into a quiet townhouse under my legal name, with two security officers stationed nearby. She continued school remotely while the investigation expanded.
Three days after Christmas, Daniel asked to see me from county jail.
I nearly refused.
Then his attorney sent a message.
Daniel claimed Margaret had another account.
An account containing money she had stolen from the Hale company.
He would reveal its location only if I promised to support his release.
When I arrived at the jail, Daniel looked exhausted.
He pressed both hands against the glass.
âElena, my mother is going to destroy everyone.â
âShe already tried.â
âYou donât understand.â
âThen explain it.â
Daniel leaned closer.
âThe money in Sofiaâs account was never the real target.â
My stomach tightened.
âWhat was?â
May you like
He looked directly into my eyes.
âYour father.â
