Chapter 7: The Woman Who Refused to Hate

A stunned silence settled over the ballroom after Daniel slipped the engagement ring into his pocket.

Vanessa looked around desperately, searching for someone—anyone—to defend her.

No one moved.

The friends who had laughed at her jokes avoided her eyes. The executives who once competed for her attention suddenly found their glasses fascinating. Even the photographers lowered their cameras.

She had never felt so completely alone.

Then, to everyone's surprise, Eleanor spoke.

"Jonathan."

Her voice was gentle but firm.

He immediately knelt beside her wheelchair.

"Yes, Mother?"

"I would like a moment with Miss Blackwell."

Jonathan hesitated.

After a long pause, he nodded and stepped back.

Vanessa stared in confusion as Eleanor motioned for her to come closer.

"I know what you're expecting," Eleanor said softly.

"You think I'm going to ask for revenge."

Vanessa remained silent.

"But revenge rarely changes a heart."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"It only changes headlines."

The older woman studied Vanessa for several moments before continuing.

"I wasn't born into this family."

Vanessa blinked.

"My father was a factory mechanic."

"My mother cleaned hotel rooms."

"I spent my teenage years polishing floors very much like the ones beneath your feet tonight."

Several guests looked at one another in surprise.

"I know exactly what it feels like to be ignored."

She reached out and gently touched Vanessa's trembling hand.

"The tragedy isn't that you looked down on me."

She paused.

"The tragedy is that you've spent so long looking down on people that you've forgotten how to look at them."

Vanessa felt tears sting her eyes.

For the first time that evening, they weren't tears of anger.

They were tears of shame.
