Chapter 6: One Phone Call Changed Everything

Vanessa refused to accept what was happening.

She forced herself to stand a little straighter, smoothing the wrinkles from her designer gown as though confidence alone could undo the disaster.

"This has gone far enough," she said sharply. "My fiancé will clear this up."

She pulled out her phone and quickly dialed.

The call connected almost immediately.

"Daniel," she said, her voice trembling with frustration. "You need to come to the ballroom. They're humiliating me."

Several guests exchanged knowing looks.

Daniel Prescott was a successful real estate developer and one of the foundation's newest corporate sponsors.

Minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

Daniel hurried inside, concern written across his face.

"Vanessa, what's going on?"

She rushed toward him.

"They're accusing me over nothing. Tell them who I am."

Daniel glanced around the room until his eyes landed on Jonathan Hawthorne.

The color drained from his face.

"Mr. Hawthorne..."

Jonathan nodded politely.

"Good evening, Daniel."

Vanessa frowned.

"You know each other?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he loosened his tie, suddenly unable to meet Jonathan's eyes.

"I... serve on the Foundation's advisory board."

Vanessa's stomach tightened.

Jonathan folded his hands.

"Your fiancée attempted to strike my mother."

Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"Tell me that isn't true."

She hesitated.

"It wasn't like that."

Jonathan pressed another button on the remote.

Security footage appeared on the giant screen.

The entire ballroom watched in silence.

There was Vanessa raising her hand.

There was Emma stepping in.

There was Eleanor sitting helplessly in her wheelchair.

No words.

No edits.

Only the truth.

Daniel closed his eyes for a brief moment.

When he opened them again, the disappointment in his expression was unmistakable.

He gently removed the engagement ring from Vanessa's finger.

"I can't build a future with someone who mistakes kindness for weakness."

The ring rested in his palm.

The relationship was over before anyone dared to speak.
