Chapter 7 - THE POWDER IN THE CHAMPAGNE

Carla worked as a banquet attendant.

During the reception, Elaine asked her to prepare a private glass of champagne for me.

The drink was supposed to be delivered after the father-son dance.

Carla noticed white powder inside the bottom of the glass.

Elaine said it was a vitamin supplement.

Carla did not believe her.

She switched the glass with an empty one and kept the original inside a service refrigerator.

Then she saw Elaine take my tablet.

She began watching the family.

While everyone focused on the slap, Carla entered the bridal suite.

She found the land trust inside Elaine’s overnight bag.

She took it.

“Why didn’t you call police immediately?” Robert asked.

Carla looked toward the floor.

“Mrs. Davenport knew my husband had an immigration hearing.”

“She said her family had friends in the department.”

“She told me I could lose him if I created trouble.”

Fear had delayed her.

It had not silenced her forever.

She handed Robert the trust.

Then she gave us a sealed bottle containing the prepared champagne.

The powder was tested before sunrise.

It contained a prescription sedative.

Combined with alcohol, it could cause confusion, loss of coordination, and memory gaps.

The plan became clearer.

After I was slapped, Tiffany expected Ryan to defend her.

I would drink privately to calm down.

The sedative would make me appear confused.

Price would examine me.

Ryan would be pressured into approving assisted living.

If the dose caused a fall, they would call it proof that I could not safely remain alone.

If it caused something worse, Tiffany and Ryan would inherit under my existing will.

I looked at my son.

His face had lost all color.

“They insured me.”

“They drugged you.”

“They were preparing for both possibilities,” Robert said.

Ryan stood.

“I want to speak to Tiffany.”

“No,” I said.

“She could explain.”

“She already did.”

He looked at me.

“You are right.”

Then he sat again.

It was difficult for him to stop searching for the version of Tiffany that loved him.

I understood.

People do not grieve only the person they lose.

They grieve the future that person performed.

By morning, police had arrested Dr. Price.

He denied knowing about the powder.

Then investigators searched his office.

They found medical reports for six older property owners.

Each had been declared cognitively impaired shortly before transferring land to companies connected to Victor Davenport.

Three had moved into assisted-living facilities.

One died within a month.

Another was still trying to regain legal control of her farm.

Tiffany’s wedding was not the first operation.

It was simply the largest.

Victor identified valuable family land.

Elaine gathered personal information.

Price created medical doubt.

Tiffany entered families through relationships.

Sometimes she befriended an adult child.

This time, she married one.

Ryan searched through old messages.

Tiffany asked about my medications during their third date.

She asked whether I had a will before meeting me.

She asked whether the land had development restrictions while pretending to admire family photographs.

The questions had sounded like interest.

They had been an inventory.

Carla looked at him with sympathy.

“She studied everyone.”

Ryan nodded.

“I helped her.”

“You trusted your wife,” Carla said.

“I distrusted my mother to do it.”

That distinction mattered to him.

He did not hide from it.

Police arrived to protect Carla.

Before leaving, she turned toward me.

“I’m sorry I didn’t stop the drink sooner.”

“You stopped it before I drank.”

“I still watched her hit you.”

“So did two hundred and fifty people.”

Carla looked toward Ryan.

He lowered his eyes.

She left without accepting the money I offered.

Two hours later, a video appeared online.

Tiffany sat inside a private interview studio.

Her makeup was perfect.

Her cheek carried a faint red mark I had never caused.

She looked into the camera and began crying.

“My mother-in-law destroyed my wedding because I refused to give her control over my marriage.”

Then she accused me of attacking her.
