Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR AT THE WEDDING

Dr. Samuel Price sat at table fourteen.

He introduced himself as one of Victor’s oldest friends.

He approached the restroom wearing a tuxedo and a concerned expression.

“Margaret, perhaps we should speak privately.”

“No.”

“I understand you feel threatened.”

“I understand you created a diagnosis without examining me.”

His eyes moved toward the police officers.

“We have met several times.”

“No, we have not.”

“You may not remember.”

There it was.

A perfect trap.

Every denial became evidence of memory loss.

Ryan looked at the doctor.

“When did you evaluate my mother?”

“At her home.”

“What dates?”

Price removed a folded report.

The first appointment supposedly occurred two months earlier.

On that date, I had been in New Mexico visiting my sister.

Photographs and airline records could prove it.

The second appointment happened during a wedding-dress fitting.

The third occurred while I attended a land-conservation meeting with Robert.

Price did not expect anyone to know my schedule.

Tiffany did.

She selected dates when witnesses outside the family could prove I was elsewhere.

That seemed careless.

Then I realized the report had not been created to survive a trial.

It only needed to create enough doubt for the land transfer to close by midnight.

Robert understood too.

“Officers, preserve that report,” he said through my phone.

“It supports an active fraud attempt.”

Price stepped backward.

Victor’s face hardened.

“You are turning a family disagreement into a criminal accusation.”

“No,” I said.

“You turned my family into a method of stealing property.”

The venue manager returned.

“Mrs. Bennett, the ballroom rental has ended.”

Guests were being directed toward the exits.

Without buses, they gathered beneath the estate entrance using rideshare applications.

Several had begun posting videos online.

Tiffany’s wedding was collapsing publicly.

She looked toward me with hatred.

“Fix this.”

“You are speaking to the wrong person.”

“You made a promise.”

“I promised thirty thousand dollars.”

“You spent more than forty-five.”

“Because you continued adding demands.”

“That means you accepted them.”

“No.”

“It means I failed to stop sooner.”

Ryan flinched.

Tiffany turned toward him.

“Your mother is punishing us because she cannot handle losing control.”

Ryan removed his wedding jacket.

He looked exhausted.

“Did you know about the land transfer?”

“No.”

“Did your father?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did your mother use Mom’s face to approve it?”

Tiffany’s eyes filled with tears.

Her tears had always changed his direction.

This time, he waited.

“Answer me.”

She looked toward Victor.

That glance ended the marriage more clearly than any confession.

Ryan stepped away.

Tiffany’s tears stopped immediately.

“You are choosing her.”

“I am choosing to ask why your family forged my mother’s name.”

Elaine Davenport suddenly moved toward the exit.

Melissa raised her camera.

“Mrs. Davenport is carrying the tablet.”

A security officer blocked Elaine.

Inside her handbag was my personal tablet.

She had not returned it after the transfer.

The police officer took it as evidence.

The screen remained unlocked.

A message thread was visible.

Victor had written:

CREATE THE SCENE.

Elaine answered:

SHE WILL REFUSE THE CHAMPAGNE.

Tiffany wrote:

RYAN WILL FREEZE.

Victor replied:

THAT IS WHY WE CHOSE HIM.

My son read the final sentence.

He did not cry.

He simply looked older.

The officer placed Victor and Elaine in separate rooms.

Tiffany reached for Ryan.

May you like

He moved away.

Then Dr. Price ran.
