CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO CHOSE SILENCE

CHAPTER 3: THE MAN WHO CHOSE SILENCE

Victoria recovered first.

"This proves nothing."

"It's an old story and an old medal."

Marcus smiled.

It wasn't kind.

"Actually..."

"It proves everything."

He nodded toward the entrance.

The ballroom doors opened.

Three military officers entered.

Behind them came two federal investigators carrying sealed evidence cases.

Marcus had made one phone call before security locked the doors.

One.

Inside the first case lay dozens of photographs.

DNA reports.

Police files.

Hospital records.

The forgotten orphan case.

Every page had been reopened within the last hour.

One investigator stepped forward.

"The preliminary DNA comparison is complete."

Every guest leaned forward.

"Ninety-nine point nine nine percent probability."

He looked at Maya.

"You are General Nathaniel Vance's biological daughter."

Silence exploded louder than applause.

Victoria stumbled backward.

"No..."

"No..."

"This isn't possible."

Marcus wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at Ethan.

"You."

Ethan lifted his head.

"When your wife was humiliated..."

"You watched."

"When she was called worthless..."

"You watched."

"When she was struck..."

"You watched."

Marcus walked closer.

"You failed her long before tonight."

Ethan's face turned white.

"I was trying to keep the peace."

Marcus's voice became ice.

"No."

"You were protecting your inheritance."

The words hit harder than any slap.

Ethan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Maya finally looked at him.

Not with anger.

Not with hatred.

Only disappointment.

"I waited..."

She whispered.

"I waited for you to choose me."

He lowered his eyes.

May you like

"I know."

"But you never did."
